#1 (1994) Mrs. Ruth (CARMICHAEL) SURRATT, wife of Arvile Quincy SURRATT, Sr. lives at 1111 Mitchell St., Conway, Ark. She has the old John D. SURRATT Bible in which there is a pretty complete record of this family. (She d. 19 Jul 1998, a98y in Morrilton, AR. ..prs)

#2. Mrs. Ruth (CARMICHAEL) SURRATT is sure John "D." SURRATT's middle name was "Daniel"; and she thinks his first wife was Berillia W. TUCKER. She was not quite sure of this; but, of cource, the Bible record is corroborative.

#3. It's seen by the chart (Pg15) that John D. and Berillia W. had five children, but that only two of them lived to adulthood.

#4. The oldest child's name is spelled variously "Ervin" and "Irvin". Also it's sometimes "Oscar Ervin" and sometimes "Irvin Oscar". "O.E." seems the preferred spelling and sequence; though the Bible itself has "Irvin Oscar"

#5. Dora A. SURRATT and Billy WILLIAMS are buried at Needs Creek Cemetery between Springhill and Holland, Faulkner County, Arkansas.

#6. It may be noted in the pages from the Bible that the death date for Richard SURRATT is not recorded. It seems likely that it was a stillbirth or that Richard lived only for a brief time.

By checking back on birth and death dates, it's easy to determin that the clipping is from a newspaper publised in the winter of 1853 or the spring of 1854, not all that long before all three of these people died.

PIONEER DIES AT GREENBRIER;
J.D. SURRATT SUCCUMBS TO PNEUMONIA

     John D. Surratt, Sr., aged 76, well known farmer and pioneer citizen of near Greenbrier for many years, died at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, after a short illness of pneumonia. Mr. Surratt for the past year had resided at McClelland, [White Co., AR.] and when that place flooded a short time ago returned to this county. It is believed that exposure during the flood probably brought on the attack of pneumonia.
     Mr. Surratt was born at *Saprtanburg, S.C., June 23, 1850, and came with his parents to Faulkner County when only nine years of age. [1859] Practically all his life was spent in the Needs Creek community until about seven years ago when he moved near England, Lonoke County. Last year he moved to McClelland.
He is survived by his wife, [Not Named!] five sons,

We don't know who the "Informant" was on this obituary, but it says J.D. was born in Spartanburg, SC. all other records list he was born in St. Clair Co., Alabama!..prs
Also says J.D. came to Faulkner Co., in 1859, age 9yrs with Parents!
This is impossible, Faulkner Co., was Not created untill 1873, so Cordon Valley was located in Conway Co., AR. per the 1860 Census..prs

DIES AT HOME OF HER DAUGHTER

Mrs. Isabelle Sims Surratt age 90yrs, died at the home of a daughter, <--- Mrs. S.J. Mills, in the Needs Creek community, near Greenbrier, shortly before noon today. Mrs. Surratt was the widow of J.D. Surratt, whose death occurred in 1927.
She was born at Dalton, Ga., February 01, 1864, and lived for many years at England, Ark. She came to the home of her daughter two months ago. Mrs. Surratt had been ill a number of months. She was a Baptist.
Also surviving are three other daughters,

Funeral will be at Needs Creek Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Wallace Glover of England, the Rev. Roy Sims of Little Rock, and the Rev. Howard Tipton of Conway. Burial will be in the Needs Creek Cemetery by McNutt Funeral Home.

She contends: "This is a copy of John Surratt's Bible Index along with his signature in front of the book. He carried this with him while serving in the Civil War. KIA at Shiloh, TN. 6 Apr 1862.

This "Bible" is definitively John D.'s Bible and NOT his father John B.? SURRATT, Bible!.
Of the 1,728 Confederate troops "killed in action" (k.i.a.) at Shiloh, TN. none of their personal effects were retrieved and sent home to their families. They were stripped of any personal valuables by Union Troop and buried in mass graves.
