Marriage of Miss Annie Surratt.
(Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.)

WASHINGTON, JUNE 17,--Miss Annie Surratt was married to-day, at St. Patrick's Church to Mr. Wm. P. TONRY, a chemist employed in the Surgeon General's office.
The ceremony, which was very private, was conducted by Rev. Father Walter, assisted by Rev. J. J. Kane.
The happy couple started immediately on a bridal tour North. The bride appeared in better health than she has enjoyed for years.
It was the desire of the parties that the marriage should be strictly private, and the usual publication of the bans was for this reason dispensed by Archbishop Spalding.
There were no bridesmaids or groomsmen. The bride was attended by her brother Isaac SURRATT, while John H. SURRATT occupied a seat in a pew in front of the altar.
These and a few intimate acquaintances of the bridal party were the only witnesses to the nuptial ceremony.

TONRY, WILLIAM P.,MD, Ph.D.
Born 16 Apr 1840, at Sligo, Ireland
Occupation: *Analytical and Consulting Chemist, and Chemical Expert, Baltimore, Maryland.
He the eldest son of William and Catharine (Brennan) TONRY. His father, who is a "last maker"** by trade, removed during his infancey to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, where he continued his business till 1848, when such a revolution was effected in it by the introduction of machinery, that he found it to his interest to remove to Boston, Massachusetts, where he still resides. (1878). Professor TONRY attended the public schools of Saint John and Boston, and passedthrough the grammer school in the latter city. At the age of sixteen (a16y, 1856) he was sent by his parents to Maryland, and commenced his collegiate studies in St.Charles College, in Howard County.
After completing the usual curriculum, he entered the Georgetown College, District of Columbia, for the purpose of persuing a thorough post-graduate course with the Jesuit students, in moral philosophy and the natural sciences. Having been at this celebrated institution four years, he completed his course, in 1865, and was immediately appointed adjunct Professor of Chemistry in the same college. This was a position not only in harmony with his tastes, but with his long-formed purpose of devoting his life to that fascinating science.
In 1866, a26y he accepted the position of assistant chemist in the laboratory of the Surgeon-General of the United States Army, in Washington, which position he filled with great ability till he was discharged by a special order, issued June 21, 1869, four days after his marriage with Miss Annie E. Suratt ( Elizabeth Susanna Surratt) born 01/01/1843--24/10/1904, of Prince George's County,Maryland. He embraced that opportunity to travel through the Unites States, particularly the Western States, with a possible view of locating in one of their growing cities, But he finally desided to return to Baltimore, where he established a labortory, as an analytical and consulting chemist and chemical expert; where he has since continued with uninterrupted success, winning for himself an enviable reputation as one of the most eminent scientists in the State.
In 1871, a31y Professor TONRY accepted the chair of Analytical and applied Chemistry at Maryland Institute, which he filled with conspicuious ability and advantage to the institution till September, 1878. While in charge of the chemical department of that school, Professor TONRY received from his Alma Mater, Georgetown College, the honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy. That was the first degree of the kind ever conferred by that venerable institution since its incorporation in 1790. That degree from Georgetown College is equal to the same degree from European institutions, as the faculty require, not only a theoretic, but a practical knowledge of the natural sciences, also a full course of moral philosophy, pursued in the Latin tongue.
Dr. TONRY has been engaged as chemical expert in many suits at law, notably those of Mrs. Wharton, charged with thepoisoning of General Ketchum, and for the murder of Mr. Van Ness, which obtained a world- wide notoriety, being engaged by the State. He was also engaged in the prosecution of Mrs. Llyod, of Leesburg, Va., for the poisoning of her husband and children; and in others, too numerous to spcify. Beside his customary duties, he has given numerous public lectures, at the Maryland Institute, Peabody Institute, and Maryland Academy of Science, on popular and scientific subjects, which have been unsurpassed for the interest they have awakened, for the learning they have exhibited, and for the brilliancy and eloqence of their delivery.
He has always manifested a deep interest in educational and political affers. In 1876, a36y He was appointed a member of the school board from the Eighth Ward 8th, which he held till elected, in 1877, to the second branchnch of the City Council, for the term of two years. In that body he has become prominent by his persistent opposition to extravagant legislation, and his eloquent advocacy of honest local government. Largely through his efforts the appropriation for 1877 was reduced half a million dollars.
He holds that city governments should be lifted out of the domain of party politics, and managed with the intergrity and prudence that a firm would manage its business; although for national matters he believes in parties, and is a stanch adherent of the Democratic party, while in religion he is a Roman Catholic. He is a leading member of the Maryland Academy of Science, and also of the American Public Health Association.
Dr. TONRY is a gentleman of unblemished character, and among scientific and learned men holds a deservedly high rank. His knowledge of the natural sciences, particulary of chemistry, is both extensive and accurate, and in cases requiring absolute certainty, his tests and decisions are regarded as final by thoes best able to form a reliable judgment. He is now [1879] in the prime of manhood, [a39y] and gives promise of a useful and honorable career beyond the average of human life.
Dr and Mrs. TONRY have four (4) children, viz, William, Albert, Reginald I. Dr., and Clara.
Note on above:
* Under today's job titles Dr. TONRY would most likely be a Forenisic Scientist
** One who made the wooden forms for the shoe-maker to make the new shoes.
This letter came from Reginald S. (Surratt) Tonry of Oregon, who is the great great grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Tonry and the Great Great Great Grandson of Mary Eugenia (Jenkins) Surratt.   MRS. SURRATT'S GRANDSONS.
Two of Them Now Fighting for Union Sam.
The whirligig of time sets things in strange juxtaposition. In June, 1896, President Grant removed William P. TONRY from office because TONRY married Anna E. SURRATT, daughter of the famous Mrs. SURRATT, who was hanged after trial for complicity in the plot against the life of Abraham Lincoln.
At Chickamauga a few days ago, when the Fifth Maryland Volunteers were encamped there, they were under command of Gen. Frederick D. GRANT. In that regiment were two men one Reginald I. TONRY, age 24yrs Sergeant in Company C, commanded by Capt. THOMSON, and the other Albert S. TONRY, age 26yrs Corporal in Company D, commanded by Capt. BOYDEN. They were the sons of the man who had lost his position, because he had married Mrs. SURRATT's daughter, and they were grandsons of Mrs. SURRATT.
Mrs. SURRATT's two sons, John and Isaac, are both living and both are in the service of the Bay Line, Baltimore.
The Baltimore Sun, which makes record of this curious minor fact in history, also calls attention to the presence of Col. MARSHALL's son, Markham, on Gen. F. D. GRANT's staff. Markham's father was one of Gen. LEE's favorite aides, and a gallant and brilliant soldier.

  WAS MRS'S SURRATT'S CHILD
THE LINCOLN CONSPIRATOR'S DAUGHTER, MRS. W.P. TONRY, DEAD
The Marriage in 1869, Lost a Resposibile Position in the War Department - Two Sons Served in the Spanish War.

Baltimore, MD. Oct. 25 -- Mrs. William P. TONRY, the only daughter of Mrs. Mary E. SURRATT, who was put to death for being involved in the Lincoln conspiracy, died here early to-day after several years' illness, resulting from her efforts to save her mother. She was 68 years old.
June 21, 1869, William P. TONRY, employed in Washington, lost his position under peculiar circumstances, and it is said, with approval of President GRANT. He had severed in the United States Army during the Civil War, and he had been detailed as assistant chemist in the laboratory of the Surgeon General's office, which position he had filled with entire satisfaction.
The trouble was said to be that he had just married. He had married, at that a woman any loyal citizen of the United States ought not to marry, according to the views of the supposedly loyal citizen of the United States, at that particular time.
His bride was Anna E. SURRATT. The girl's mother had been hanged a short time before for complicity in the assassination of President LINCOLN.
At Chickamauga in 1898 when the Fifth Maryland Volunteers were encamped there, they were under Command of General Frederick GRANT. In that regiment were Reginald I. TONRY, Sergeant in Company "C" Commanded by Captain THOMPSON, and Albert S. TONRY, Corporal in Company "L", Commanded by Captain BOYDEN.
They were the sons of the man who had lost his position because he had married Mrs. SURRATT'S Daughter, and they were Grandsons of Mrs. SURRATT.
Many remember Mrs. SURRATT'S trial and conviction after John Wilkes BOOTH had killed the President. They remember her hanging, too, but very few remember that her son-in-law, a loyal Union Soldier, was discharged because he married her daughter. And very, very few know that Mrs. SURRATT's two Grandsons were serving under the Stars and Strips in the Volunteer Army. Mrs. TONRY had just left school when her mother was hanged. She was (probably about 18 years old and was an only daughter.

Lincoln's Assassins, A Complete Account of their Capture, Trial & Punishment
by Roy Z. Chamlee,
per [REF:#17]
Anna SURRATT, never recovered from the traumatic events. Unable to bear living in the house on H street, she stayed for a short time with John BROPHY and his wife and then lived with the HOLOHANS. After passing through a period of ostracism, she married a government clerk, William P. TONRY. Some believed Federal authorities dismissed him for marrying Anna. For a while the couple lived in poverty. But TONRY eventually became a professor and a highly respected chemist in Baltimore. Their improving financial and social position relived some strain in Anna's life, but she continued to suffer emotionally and physically. Her hair turned white in her early thirties. She remained subject to fits of extreme nervousness, boarding on insanity.
Living in Baltimore, close to the TONRYS, were her brother John and his family.
Isaac SURRATT returned to the United States from Monterrey, Mexico, in 1866. He also moved to Baltimore, where he lived quietly. With the passage of years, John & Anna gradually let the conspiracy issue rest.

  Possible Record Problem!
In "Pamsplace" on mywebpage.netscape 5 Generation of SURRATT's she states:
"Letter from Mrs. Mary (Tonry) Walsh, daughter of Anna, grandaughter of John Harrison Surratt to James O. HALL states that about a year before his death [Aug 1862] a horse had kicked him. This may have been the cause of his death. There have been other accounts that say he [John H., Sr.] died of apoplexy.
Pamela K. (HARTZOG) PLACE does not state when this "Letter" was dated, but she is in error.!
Mrs. Mary (Tonry) WALSH, was NOT a daughter of Annie (Surratt) TONRY!!!!
She is the daughter of Dr. Reginald I. & Cecelia (Bond) TONRY
A Grandaughter of Mrs. Annie (Surratt) TONRY.
A Gr-Grandaughter of John H. SURRATT, Sr. who died in Aug. 1862.
Where did Mrs. Mary G. (Tonry) WALSH get her infomation? she was not even born until 1913, some 51 years after her Gr-Grandfather had died. Not from her Grandmother Annie (Surratt) TONRY, who died when Mary G. (Tonry) WALSH was only 9yrs old?
This is a perfect example of some one stealing sombody else work, not vaerifying the information, then listing it as "Fact" which contributes to the confusion. This "error" was listed in 1996 work of [1996 REF:#19 Pg257.24] (See Below)...prs
Books Letter: Mary (Tonry) WALSH to James O. HALL - Date Not Listed!
According to a letter from Mary (Tonry) WALSH to James O. Hall (a copy in the surratt society archives)
"just a year beford John Surratt's death, a horse had kicked him. Mrs WALSH continued by saying that this may have been the cause of her grandfather's death. In addition Mrs. WALSH stated that a priest had said that John Surratt was almost a Catholic when he died. There have been other accounts that say John Surratt died of apoplexy." per [1996 REF:#19 Pg257.24]
  Possible Record Problem!
Mrs. Mary G. (Tonry) WALSH, was a "Great-Grandaughter" of John H. SURRATT, Sr. who died 51 years before Mary G. Tonry was born!
She is a Granddaughter (Not Daughter) of Mrs. Anna (Surratt) TONRY died 1904, Mary G. Tonry was only 9 years old.
Her Father Reginald I. TONRY died 1946, Mary G. Tonry was 33yrs old.
She only had "contact" of this info. from her father?
