James Monroe Gregory, 76, Oldtime Veterinarian, Passes
James Monroe Gregory, 76, oldtime North Texas veterinarian, died Sunday at his home in Arlington after a lengthy illness.
Gregory, who began practicing in 1905, was for many years the only animal surgeon available to farmers in Arlington, Grand Prairie, Burleson, Birdville, Irving and other communities in that area. He attended the now-defunct Southwest Veterinary College in Dallas. Gregory, who lived in Piano for several years, was a railroad fireman and was interested in animal medicine by his brother, the late W. G. Gregory of Dallas, another early veterinarian.
Gregory was a native of Tennessee. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Arlington Presbyterian Church with the Rev. S. M. Barnett and the Rev. Charles L. Dickey officiating. A Masonic service will be held at the grave side at Parkdale Cemetery in Fort Worth.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, J. T. Gregory of Ballinger, Paul Gregory of San Angelo and Charlie Gregory of Arlington; a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Dunlop of Arlington; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Bennett of Dallas and Mrs. J. M. Searcey of Fort Worth; and a brother, S. G. Gregory of Date City. Fla.

Funeral Service Is Conducted in Kaufman Tuesday
Dr. L. E. Gregory, a practicing veterinarian for 40 years, passed away at a Terrell hospital at an early hour Monday morning. The body was moved to his home in Kaufman, where the funeral rites were conducted at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Felix W. Tarbet, minister of the Church of Christ at Terrell, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Thos. A. Bohannan, Kaufman Baptist pastor. Interment was made in the Kaufman cemetery and Kaufman Odd Fellows conducted their regular service at the graveside.
Dr. Gregory had been critically ill for several days and he was moved to a Terrell hospital Sunday.
Dr. Louis Edward Gregory was a native of Tennessee, born April 13, 1871. The family came to Texas 52 years ago, locating first at Richardson, later moving to Oklahoma and then to Kaufman, where he had been a resident for the past 32 years. He married Miss Emma Stephens on Aug. 1, 1895, while residing in Oklahoma. There were six children born to this union, two of whom preceded him in death.
Surviving are his widow; one son, William M. Gregory of Conroe; three daughters, Mrs. M. H. Mabry of Huntsville, Mrs. O. B. Sparkman of Ennis, and Miss Eunice Gregory of Kaufman; six grandchildren; three brothers, Dr. J. M. Gregory of Arlington, W. G. Gregory of San Antonio and Shelby Gregory of Lakeland, Fla.; One sister Mrs. M. L. Bennett of Dallas, and a half-sister, Mrs. Pink Searcy of Fort Worth, and other relatives, including a number of nieces and nephews.
Dr. Gregory practiced his profession throughout Kaufman county and in Van Zandt and Dallas counties over a long period. He had been a member of the Church of Christ for many years and was active in the Odd Fellows Lodge.
Active pallbearers were: Doc Webb, Fred Guthrie, Buster Scott, Roy Palmer, Ben Jones and Odes Kiser. All friends of the family were named honorary pallbearers.
