Westmoreland World, 27 October 1983

Luther Douglas Hall, age 66, Route 4, Westmoreland died Saturday, October 22, at the Sumner County Memorial Hospital in Gallatin. He was a farmer and member of Eulia General Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Jewell Adcock Hall; three sisters, Zelma Miller of Jeffersonville, Indiana; Mrs. Donnie Harrison and Mrs. Larunia Simons, both of Westmoreland; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were Monday, October 24, at 11 a. m. in the Eulia General Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. The Alexander Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

J. G. (Garland) Harper, 82, formerly of Westmoreland, died at Baptist Hospital in Nashville Friday, October 21. He was a retired barber and a member of Westmoreland United Methodist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Harper Arney; one son, Jim Harper of Cowan, Tennessee; two sisters, Mrs. Will Carr of Nashville and Mrs. Wilma Hightower, Gallatin; one brother, Louis Harper, Portland; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 23, at 1 p.m. at the Westmoreland United Methodist Church with burial following in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. The Alexander Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Westmoreland World, 3 November 1983

Funeral services for Clarence Dell Pedigo were held Wednesday October 26, at Alexander Funeral Home in Westmoreland. Pedigo, a resident of Route 3, died October 25, 1983 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He was 81. Survivors include; three sons, Charles Pedigo, St. Clair, Michigan; William Pedigo, Largo, Florida; Floyd Pedigo, Lake Orion, Michigan; three daughters, Ruth Pedigo, Helen Priboj, both of Westmoreland; Jean Flitton of St. Clair, Michigan; two brothers, Leo and James Pedigo, both of Westmoreland; one sister, Launa Coley of Mt. Juliet; 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Burial was in Willow Grove Cemetery in Armada, Michigan.

Westmoreland World, 10 November 1983

Former Westmoreland Mayor and long-time city councilman, Hubert Jiles died unexpectedly Monday, November 7, of a heart-attack, Jiles, age 65, was stricken at his home on Route 2, Westmoreland, and was rushed to Sumner County Memorial Hospital in Gallatin where he was pronounced dead on arrival He was a retired Westmoreland furniture merchant and a member of the Westmoreland Church of Christ. Jiles is survived by his wife, Frances; one daughter, Judy Woodard of Westmoreland and one granddaughter. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, November 9, at 11 a. m. at the Westmoreland Church of Christ with burial following in the Eulia Cemetery.

Westmoreland World, 23 November 1983

Betty Jean Sprow, age 46, died Tuesday, November 8 at her residence of Route 1, Adolphus. Survivors include her husband, Louis Sprow; her father and mother, Bassell and Georgia Bowman, Route 1, Adolphus; two sisters Tina Bowman, Adolphus, and Joyce Boykins, St. Clair Shores, Michigan; one brother, Bob Bowman, Westmoreland. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held at Dyer Funeral Home, Cookeville, Tennessee, Friday, November 11 with burial in the Crestlawn Cemetery, also in Cookeville.

Ewell Clinton (Buck) Hanes, age 52, a resident of Route 1, Westmoreland, died Wednesday, November 23 at the Baptist Hospital, Nashville. Survivors include his wife, Janice Tuttle Hanes; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hanes, Westmoreland; one sister, Mrs. Charles W. Wright, Gallatin. Funeral services were held Friday, November 25, at 2 p. m. at Alexander Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.

Westmoreland World, 15 December 1983

Mrs. Agnes Gregory, 77, formerly of Westmoreland died Thursday, December 8, at the Sumner County Memorial Hospital. She was a retired teacher. She was also a member of the Westmoreland Home Demonstration Club and Turner's Station Methodist Church. She is survived by four sons, Berry Gregory, Westmoreland; Thomas Gregory, Harold Gregory, and Gerald Gregory, all of Gallatin. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Wherry and Mrs. Ruby Echols, both of Nashville. Eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 10, at the Alexander Funeral Home with burial in Crestview Memorial Park.

Westmoreland World, 29 December 1983

Blankenships die in fire - Tragedy struck Westmoreland in the wee hours of Christmas Eve morning as a fire claimed the home and lives of Luther and Lorine Blankenship on the Pleasant Grove Road just beyond the Westmoreland city limits in Macon County. Westmoreland fire officials received the call at 3:30 a. m. December 24 and responded 10 minutes later to find the small frame house fully engulfed and the roof already caved in. The Macon County Fire Department also responded to help battle the flames for more than three hours. The Macon County Ambulance Service removed the bodies of the elderly couple at approximately 6:30 p. m. Luther Blankenship, 64, is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Owen, Westmoreland, Lois Dean Mezo, Gallatin; one son, David Blankenship, Westmoreland and one step-son Skip Briley, Harriman. Other survivors include 4 brothers, Dewey and James Blankenship, both of Adolphus, Carl Gene Blankenship, Westmoreland and Eulas Dee Blankenship, Indianapolis and one sister Flossie Gregory, Westmoreland. Lorine Blankenship, 61, is survived by her son Skip Briley, three step-children, David Blankenship, Mary Ann Owen and Lois Dean Mezo; one brother, Douglas W. Cotton, Florida and one sister, Mrs. Tommie Scott, Gallatin. The couple is also survived by 9 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday, December 26, at the Alexander Funeral Home in Westmoreland with burial following in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Westmoreland World, 29 December 1983

Mr. Gilbert W. Knight, age 92, New Zion Community, died Sunday, December 18, at the Macon County General Hospital. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Gracie Cliburn Knight and one sister, Mrs. Lola Knight of Nashville. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 20, at the Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ with burial following in the church cemetery. Services were conducted by the Alexander Funeral Home, Westmoreland.
