I Joseph E. Smart have this day bargained and sold and do hereby transfer and convey to J. W. Stark for the consideration of Four hundred Dollars.  The following tract or parcel of Land lying in Robertson County Tennessee District No. 15 being a part of a tract known as the Gowen tract, bounded as follows (to wit) Beginning in O. Mulloy's West boundary line at a Hickory tree running North with said line and 20 poles to a black Oak.  Thence West 51 1/2 poles to a small Sasafras.  Thence North 39 1/2 poles to a Spanish Oak. Thence West 123 poles to a rock in Louis Merits line.  Thence South 57 1/2 poles to a rock in Thomas Barry's line.  Thence East 175 poles to the Beginning containing Fifty acres more or less to have and to hold the same to the said J. W. Stark his heirs and assigns forever  I covenant with the said J. W. Stark his heirs and representatives that I am lawfully seized of said Land and have a good right to convey it and that the same is unencumbered.  I further covenant to warrant the title to said Land against the lawful claims of all persons whatever.

You are hereby authorized and empowered to take the examination of Mary A. Smart privately and apart from her husband relative to the free execution of the foregoing deed and the same so taken to certify under your hand and seal.

Robertson County    Mary A. Smart wife of Jo. Smart having personally appeared before me and having by virtue of the authority in me vested been examined privately and apart from her said husband and she having acknowledged the due execution of the foregoing deed by her freely, voluntarily, and understandingly without compulsion or restraint by her said husband and for the purpose therein expressed the same is therefore certified.
