It will be noticed that the majority of this company took the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. in order to get away from Camp Butler, Illinois. At one period of their imprisonment, the death rate in the regiment was ten per day. To remain there seemed to be a certain death. The regiment had 975 men when organized. Colonel Head reported 450 men fit for duty at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. From this we see that a goodly number were sick before starting the long journey to prison. They had been exposed in the four days battle at Fort Donelson to a severe snow storm, then were carried on open decks of prison boats to Cairo, Illinois, then by rail, via St. Louis, Missouri, to Camp Butler which was near Springfield, Illinois, in cattle cars, box cars or whatever could be had for conveyance. Here they were getting first hand knowledge of what General Sherman said war was. This company seemed more demoralized than the other companies in the regiment by the number taking the Oath. This could have been influence brought to bear on them but most likely they had been more exposed than other companies. Included in the history of this regiment is a report by Union Officer of conditions at Camp Butler, Illinois.
