18th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (Bates)

Organized on June 11, 1861. Mustered into Confederate Service August 7, 1861.

Colonel: Joseph B. Palmer.

Lieutenant Colonel's: A. G. Carden and William R. Butler.

Major's: Samuel W. Davis and W. H. Joyner.

Company B, Captain's: W. H. Joyner, James W. Roscoe. Men from Sumner and Davidson Counties.

Organized June 11, 1861. Mustered into Confederate Service August 7, 1861. After organization at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee the regiment was sent to Bowling Green, Kentucky. Then sent to Fort Donelson, on the Cumberland River in Stewart County, Tennessee. Was surrendered on February 16, 1862. Then sent to prison at Camp Butler, Illinois. Exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi on September 16, 1862. The regiment had six hundred and eighty-five effectives at Fort Donelson, suffering fifty-two casualties. It took an active part in the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee losing one hundred sixty-six killed and wounded, out of four hundred and thirty engaged.

At Chickamauga, Georgia the loss was one hundred forty-four killed and wounded. Was not badly hurt at Missionary Ridge, only one casualty.

On January 19, 1863 the regiment reported four hundred thirty men, of which three hundred and five were able for duty.

After wintering at Dalton, Georgia, they fought in the Atlanta Campaign including Rocky Face Ridge, Reseca, New Hope Church, Powder Springs Road and Chattahoochee River suffering severely in killed and wounded. During the sedge of Atlanta they were under continuous fire for twenty-six days. Here they were outflanked and the greater part of the regiment captured.

The 18th was in Hood's Invasion of Tennessee but did not arrive at Franklin, Tennessee in time for the battle. The Brigade was detached to join General Forrest at Murfreesboro and so missed the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee. They were then sent to North Carolina to join General Johnston's Army under the command of General Palmer. Surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina. General Palmer was directed to conduct the Tennessee troops home. Paroled on May 1, 1865.

S. C. Bowers - 2nd Lieutenant. Made 1st Lieutenant succeeding Lieutenant Roscoe. Captured at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. Exchanged. Detailed as Conscript Officer. Captured at Lebanon, Tennessee. Sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio again.

W. M. Gleaves - Bvt. 2nd Lieutenant. Escaped from Fort Donelson, Tennessee. Enlisted in Company C, 9th Tennessee Cavalry, also see.

Thomas H. Hamilton - 2nd Lieutenant on October 25, 1862. Detailed as Drill Master. Detailed as Conscript Officer. Wounded at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on January 3, 1863. Left on battlefield. Captured at Nashville, Tennessee on January 30, 1864.

Coggin, James Jordan - Enlisted at Goodlettsville, Tennessee in May 1861. Wounded at Fort Donelson on February 13, 1862. Left arm broken, several pieces of bone taken out. Wounded in breast over heart, breast bone broken, several pieces of bone taken out. Mini ball remained in breast until discharged as permanently disabled. Went home.

Drake, John Morrell - Captured at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. Died at Camp Butler, Illinois on May 11, 1862.

Drake, W. P. - Sent home sick from Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Elizer, Jesse P. - Corporal. Escaped at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. Went home. General Morgan's command and was in and around Gallatin, Tennessee and Elizer learned from friends in the command that Morgan was taking two hundred had picked men to ambush the Federal Army at Tyree Springs, Tennessee on its return to Nashville, Tennessee following the battle of Perryville, Kentucky. Everyone was wanting to go along for the lark and Elizer was in the number. Result, he was killed, fighting with a command to which he did not even belong.
