Elizabeth Stovall, Petition for Dower, 1866

To the Honorable Thos. Douglass Judge of the County Court of Sumner County. Elizabeth Stovall a citizen of Sumner County Petitioner vs. Marcus R., James M., A. G. Stovall and Susan Stovall, W. G. Henry and wife Emily Henry citizens of Sumner County, John Golston and wife Louisa Golston Citizens of Wilson County, Westley Stovall a citizen of Robertson County, A. F. Stovall of Obion County, and Adaline Cartwright and Robert Stovall non residents. Your Petitioner respectfully shows to the court that she was the wife of William T. Stovall who resided and died in Sumner County on the seventh of March 1864 leaving the petitioner his widow and the defendants, Marcus R., James M., Robert, Westley, A. G., Susan, A. F. Stovall, and Emily Henry wife of W. G. Henry, Louisa Golston wife of John Golston and Adaline Cartwright, his only children and heirs at law. Said William T. Stovall made a will some years ago which was proven and recorded sometime in the Spring of 1865. Said William T. also made a deed of trust conveying to John Patterson all of his property both real and personal before the probate of said will, making said will void. Your petitioner dissented from the provisions of said will within the time prescribed by law. At the time of his death the said William T. Stovall was seized in fee of a tract of land containing two hundred and forty acres lying in Sumner County on Goose Creek, bounded on the East by the lands of Samuel Rickman, on the North by the lands of Lucy Stovall, on the West by Haley, on the South by the lands of Harris and Rickman, said land lies in District# 14. Petitioner prays that dower be assigned her out of said land within the boundaries of the above described tract of land, there is fifty acres belonging to the widow in her own right.
