Sumner County
 

In pursuance of an act of the General Assemble of the State of Tennessee passed the Third day of December 1835 we have proceeded to lay off the County of Sumner aforesaid into twenty Districts bounded as follows. 

District Number 1

Election to be held at Hartsville.

Begins at the mouth of Goose Creek running thence Northwardly with the Smith County Lines to a point that will include John Y. Roper, then Westwardly including Pleasant Duncan and along Vances’ lanes crossing the West Fork of Goose Creek below John Mills continue Westwardly with the extreme height of the ridge which divides the waters of Second Creek from those of Goose Creek to the corner of Bartholomew Stovalls field, then down Second Creek to the mouth, then up the river to the beginning.  

District Number 2

Election to be held at Blakemore’s Spring.

Begin at the mouth of Second Creek the South West corner of District number one, running thence up said creek with No. 1 to the North West corner of the same at the corner of B. Stovalls field, then Westwardly along the extreme height of the ridge which divides the waters of Rocky Creek and Lick Creek from those of the East Fork of Bledsoes Creek leaving Thomas Jones and Henry Jones to the South of said lines to a point due North of the lane behind Dickason and Charlton, then South through said lane crossing Lick Creek and leaving Dr. Sharp to the West of James Harrisons to the East crossing the main road at Yourees Blacksmith Shop continue Southwardly including Augustine Snow and along the ridge intersecting the road Wadins? to the Canoe Branch at the old South Trace, then with said road to the mouth of the Canoe Branch, then up Cumberland River to the beginning. 

District Number 3

Elections held at Castalian Springs.

Begin on Cumberland River at the mouth of the Canoe Branch South West corner of No. 2 running Northwardly with the Western boundary of No. 2 along the road leading to the South Trace continuing along the ridge passing to the Westward of Augustine Snow and Youree’s Blacksmith Shop and James Harrison and East of Dr. Sharp crossing Lick Creek passing through the lane between Dickason and Charlton, to the North West corner of No. 2, then Westwardly with district No. 13 including Capt. Henry Head, and down his spring branch and along the lane between Wetherred and Brown and with the road leading to Doneraial, then down Bledsoes Creek to the main road then along said road to Wilson Cage’s lanes, then along said lane and J. C.Cook’s lane, crossing the Stage road, and along Bruce’s Eastern boundary line to William’s gate, then along the road to Bentley’s Ferry on Cumberland River, then up said river to the beginning. 

District Number 4

Election at Cairo.

Begin at Bentley’s Ferry the South West corner of No. 3 running with the Western boundary of No. 3 Northwardly along Bentley’s Ferry road and Bruices Eastern boundary line through the lanes of J. C. Cook and Wilson Cage to the main road, with said road to Bledsoes Creek then up the creek to the upper end of the bluffs between J. Paterson and Sanderson’s old place, then a line Southwestwardly leaving Richard Blythe’s old house and spring to the south, Benjamin Desha’s house to the South, John Sheppard to the North and James Gourley to the South and along the road leading to Gallatin to the drean of Asher’s Creek between said Gourley and Joel Parrish the North East corner of No. 5 then down said drean and Asher’s Creek to the river, then up the river to the beginning. 

District Number 5

Elections at Gallatin.

Begin at the mouth of Station Camp, run up Cumberland River to Ashers Creek, then up said creek to the main road from Gallatin to Cairo, then up that spring leading between Joel Parrish and James Gourly to a brook the North East corner of Mothrels old preemption then West with the Northern boundary of said preemption and Jonathan Wilsons line to a branch of the little East fork of Station Camp, then down said branch and creek and the main creek to the beginning. 

District Number 6

Elections at Babers Mills .

Beginning at the mouth of Station Camp Creek running down the river to the mouth of a Small Branch above Barrows Landing thence up said branch a North direction so as to strike Station Camp Creek above Isaac Douglass thence up the creek to the upper Gallatin Road at Rawlings old place thence East with said road to the creek west of Gallatin thence down the creek to the beginning. 

District Number 7

Elections at Hendersonville.

Beginning on the river at the mouth of a Small Branch above Barrows Landing running up said Branch a North direction so as to strike Station Camp Creek above Isaac Douglass thence up the creek to the upper Gallatin Road at Rawlings old place thence west with the road to the dividing ridge between Station Camp and Drakes Creek thence a South direction with the dividing ridge to an old road near Peter Madrey, thence West direction with said road to the dividing ridge between Drakes Creek and Manskers Creek and South of John T. Minters, thence a South direction crossing the lower road west of Thomas Doxsey and striking the river a little below Pearses Landing thence up the river to the beginning.

District Number 8

Elections at John B. Crunks.

Beginning on the river below Pearses Landing running a North direction with the west line of No. 7 and on with the dividing ridge between Manskers Creek and Drakes Creek striking the Roberson line at the south west corner of James Frazors field thence west with the Roberson line passing Samuel Webs and Sholes to the Davidson line thence due South with the Davidson line to Lassiters Fork of Manskers Creek and down the creek to the river and up the river to the beginning. 

District Number 9

Elections at Leonard B. Pains.

Beginning at the old road on the dividing ridge near and south of John T. Minters running a north direction with the dividing ridge and East line of No. 8 to the top of the ridge and Roberson line at the Southwest corner of James Frazors field thence with the Roberson line and road above Turpins thence with the ridge to a point between Capses? And John Garrisons thence a South direction with the dividing ridge between Station Camp and Drakes Creek to the old road that runs near Peter Madries and South line of No. 7 thence west with said road and line to the beginning.

District Number 10

Elections at Jesse Gamblems.

Beginning on the upper road East of William Frazors and where the East line of No. 9 crosses running a North direction with said line and dividing ridge between Station Camp and Drakes Creek to a point between John Harrisons and Capses thence with the ridge and the South boundary of No. 19? to a point on the ridge due North of the Salt Well then South to the Well and down the creek to the point of a ridge that makes down to the school house near Noah Collens and with the dividing ridge between West and Middle Station Camp Creek to the upper road between Vinsons and Leaths thence west with the road to the beginning.

District Number 11

Elections at Salum.

Beginning at the South East corner of No. 10 on the upper road between Leaths and Vinsants running in North direction with the dividing ridge to the School House near Noah Collens and North to the creek with the line of No. 10 and up the creek to the Salt Well thence due North to the ridge thence East with the ridge to the road leading from Gallatin to Dobbins thence South with said road to the creek near Gallatin thence down the creek to the upper Nashville Road thence down the road a West direction to the beginning.

District Number 12

Elections at John Pentecosts near Shilo.

Begin at Donnerail the North West corner of No. 3 running thence with No. 3 down the creek to the upper end of the bluff between James Patterson and Sandersons old place and North East corner of No. 5 then with the line of No. 5 passing through Richard’s Blythes old place and Benjamin Desha’s leaving the houses to the South and passing between John Sheppard and James Gourly and with the road leading to Gallatin to a rock near that spring? of Ashers Creek running between Joel Parrish and James Gourley North West corner of No. 4 and North East corner of No. 5 also the North East corner of Mothrels old preemption then West with the Northern boundary of No. 5 and Mothrels old preemption and along Jonathan Wilsons line to a branch of the Little East Fork of Station Camp, then down said branch and creek to the Stage Road North of Gallatin then Northwardly with said road to the top of the main ridge at Dobbin’s Gap, then along the extreme height of said ridge as it meanders to the spur of said ridge which divides the waters of the Brushes Fork from those of the Rogues Fork of Bledsoes Creek, thence along the extreme height of said spur and on to Bledsoes Creek above James Hann? old place, then down said creek to the beginning.

District Number 13

Elections held at Joseph Carter Jr.

Begin at the corner of B. Stovalls fence, the North West corner of No. 1 North East corner of No. 2 and South West corner of No. 14 running Northwardly with the Western boundary of No. 14 along the extreme height of the ridge dividing the waters of Bledsoes Creek from those of Goose Creek to the extreme height of the main ridge dividing the water of Cumberland River from those of Barren River, leaving E. Smothers to the East, then Westwardly along the extreme height of the main ridge to the North corner of No. 12 on the spur of the ridge that  will ? divide the waters of the Brushy Fork from those of the Rogues Fork of Bledsoes Creek, then along said spur with the line of No. 12 to Bledsoes Creek, then down said creek to Donnerail, then Eastwardly with the Northern boundary of No. 3 along the road leading from Donerail to Robert Weathereds old place now Wm. Weathereds and along the lane between said Weathered and George Brown to Capt. H.Heads spring branch, then up said branch leaving H. Head in the third district,  continuing Eastwardly with No. 3 and 2 along the extreme height of the  ridge dividing the waters of the East Fork of Bledsoes Creek from those of the Link Creek and Rocky Creek to the beginning.

 District Number 14

Elections held at Widow Burnleys.

Begin on the Smith County line the North East corner of District No. 1 North of J. Y. Roper running thence with the Northern boundary of No. 1 leaving said Roper and Pleasant Duncan to the South, through Vances lane, crossing the West Fork of Goose Creek below John Mills then along the extreme height of the ridge dividing the waters of the Goose Creek from those of Rocky Creek to the corner of B. Stovalls fence North West corner of No. 1 also corner to No. 2 and 13 , then Northwardly with the Eastern boundary of No. 13 along the extreme height of the ridge dividing the waters of Bledsoes Creek from those of Goose Creek to the extreme height of the main ridge including E. Smothers, then Eastwardly ? with the extreme height of the main ridge to the Smith County line, then South with said line to the beginning.

 District Number 15

Moses Meadors

Beginning at the North East corner of Sumner County running South with the Smith County line to the great ridge that divides the waters of Cumberland and Barron Rivers, thence Westwardly with the highest ground of the ridge so as to include Gilbreath Morrison, Slone Montgomery and the Harney place to the Rock House Road, thence Northwardly with said road to the Kentucky line, thence East with said State line to the beginning.

 District Number 16

George Troutts

Beginning at Rock House Road where it crosses the ridge running Northwardly with said road to the Kentucky line, thence West with said State line to the Middle Fork of Drakes Creek, thence up said creek to the Stage Road, thence with said road to the Greenfield Road, thence with said road to the top of the ridge, thence with the highest ground of the ridge and ? Eastwardly to the beginning.

 District Number 17

William Hobdys

Beginning where the Greenfield Road crosses John A. Reddicks spring branch running Northhwardly with said road to the Stage Road, thence with the Stage Road to the Middle Fork of Drakes Creek, thence down said creek to the Kentucky line, thence West with said line to Drakes Creek, thence up said creek to the Caney Fork and thence up said Caney Fork to the beginning.

 District Number 18

Daniel Bradleys

Beginning at the top of the ridge where the Greenfield Road crosses it, running Northwardly with said road to John A. Reddicks spring branch, thence down the same as it meanders to Drakes Creek, thence up said creek to the old State Road, thence Westwardly with a road that runs from Sarver and Branhams Mill to Daniel Meloys passing the plantation of John Brizendine where the late James Roney formally lived, thence Southwardly with the Old Ridge Road leading from Roneys old place to Parnals old place to the old State Road, thence with said road to Sharps Creek, thence up said creek to a point near John Roneys old place, thence with a line well marked with a blaze and 2 chops to the top of the ridge cornering on a 3 forked poplar standing near the road leading from Presley Suttles to Morgan Hollis said popular marked on each fork with a blaze and 2 chops above and 2 below, thence Eastwardly with the highest ground of the ridge to the beginning.

 District Number 19

Edward Kelly

Beginning on the top of the ridge at a 3 forked popular standing near the road that leads from Prestley Suttles to Morgan Hollis marked on each fork with a blaze and 2 chops above and 2 below running Northwestwardly with a well marked line with a blaze and 2 chops to Sharps Creek near John Roney’s old place, thence down said creek to the road leading from Fountain Head Meeting House to Daniel Meloys, thence with said road to the Roberson County line, thence Southwardly with said county line to a point North of Turpins and South of Robertson, thence a due East course to the top of the ridge, thence Eastwardly with the top of the ridge to the beginning.

 District Number 20

Bartholomew Ozburn

Beginning at Sharps Creek where the Old State Road crosses it running Northwardly with said road to the Old Ridge Road leading from Roneys old place to Parnals old place, thence with said Old Ridge Road to the road leading from Fountain Head Meeting House to Daniel Meloys, thence Northeastwardly with said road passing Fountain Head Meeting House to Drakes Creek near Sarver and Branhams Mill, thence down said creek to the Kentucky line, thence West with said to the Northwest corner of Sumner County, thence Southwardly with the Roberson County line to the road between Daniel Meloys farm and Armstrongs, thence with said road to Sharps Creek, thence up said creek to the beginning.

 

We certify that the forgoing is a true representation of the Districts laid off by us of Sumner County No. from one to twenty.

Ashers Creek of Cumberland River

Ashers Creek is just west of the northeastern boundary between Districts Five and Four.  Its headwater begins in the SSE portion of District Twelve, just north of Gallatin, Tennessee.

 

 

 

Bledsoe Creek of Cumberland River

Bledsoe Creek travels through Districts: Four, Twelve and Thirteen and is one of the longer waterways in Sumner County with several feeder forks.  Bledsoe Creek empties into the Cumberland River east of Gallatin, Tennessee.  Its headwater begins at the Great Ridge which runs west to east through the northern portion of Sumner County.

 

 

Brushy Fork of Bledsoe Creek

Brushy Fork headwaters are located at the Ridge and travels through District Twelve and enters Bledsoe Creek at the boundary with District Thirteen. 

 

 

Caney Fork of Drakes Creek

 Caney Fork follows the border of Districts Seventeen and Eighteen where it empties into Drakes Creek at the boundary with District Twenty.

 

 

Canoe Branch of Cumberland River

Canoe Branch follows the NE boundary between District Three and Two.  Its headwater is just east of Bledsoe Lick in District Three and this branch empties into the Cumberland River east of Bledsoe Creek.

 

 

 

Cumberland River

The Cumberland River is the largest waterway that borders Sumner County with Wilson County, Tennessee.  The river was used as a source of commerce and travel during the early settlement days of the region.  It connected Sumner County with places as far south as New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

Deshas Creek of Bledsoe Creek

Deshas Creek's headwater is in District Twelve east of Dobbins and travels SE through the boarder with District Four where it empties into Bledsoe Creek.

 

 

 

Drakes Creek of Cumberland River

Drakes Creek headwater is at the Great Ridge in the western portion of Sumner County in District Nine crossing both Upper and Lower Nashville Roads where it enters District Ten and empties into the Cumberland River.

 

 

 

Dry Fork of Bledsoe Creek

Dry Fork has its headwaters at the Great Ridge traveling east through District Twelve where it empties into Bledsoe Creek 

 

East Fork of Bledsoe Creek

 East Fork head is just west of the junction of Districts: One, Two, Thirteen and Fourteen traveling west and emptying into Bledsoe Creek south of Bethpage, Tennessee.

 

East Fork of Station Camp Creek

Station Camp Creek runs through Districts: Six, Eleven and Twelve just N and W of Gallatin, the county seat of Sumner County, Tennessee.  

 

Goose Creek of Cumberland River

Goose Creek empties into the Cumberland River and is shown on this map in Sumner County, District One.  The creek also splits District Fourteen on its NNW trek to its beginning.  The creek runs through Hartsville, which is the present day county seat of Trousdale County, Tennessee. 

 

Lick Creek of Bledsoe Creek

Lick Creek begins in the NNW corner of District Two and empties into Bledsoe Creek in District Four. 

 

Long Creek

 Long Creek's headwaters are shown in Smith County.  The waterway enters Sumner County in the NE corner of District Fifteen and then meanders N and crosses into the State of Kentucky.

 

Manskers Creek of Cumberland River

In the southwestern portion of Sumner County  was Mansker's Creek.  It formed the boundary line between Sumner and Davidson Counties.  Mansker's Creek headwater is in District Eight and travels SSE through the district crossing lower Nashville Road and empties into the Cumberland River south of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

 

 

 

Middle Fork of Drakes Creek

Middle Fork headwaters are in the center of District Sixteen where it meanders NW meating the boundary with District Seventeen and eventually enters the State of Kentucky.

 

North Fork of Station Camp Creek

Station Camp Creek runs through Districts: Six, Eleven and Twelve just N and W of Gallatin, the county seat of Sumner County, Tennessee.  

 

Otter Fork of Bledsoe Creek

Otter Fork is located in District Thirteen and empties into Bledsoe Creek just north of Bethpage, Tennessee. 

 

 

 

Red River

 Red River enters Sumner County from Robertson County, Tennessee in District Twenty.  It travels through portions of Districts Eighteen and Nineteen.

 

Rock House Fork of Bledsoe Creek

Rock House Fork headwaters lie in the northern portion of District Thirteen and empties into Bledsoe Creek just NE of Bethpage, Tennessee. 

 

Rocky Creek of Cumberland River

Rocky Creek's beginning is in the NE portion of District Two and travels through the center of the district.  The creek empties into the Cumberland River. 

 

Rogues Fork of Bledsoe Creek

Rogues Fork is located in the southern portion of District Sixteen and empties into Bledsoe Creek at Bethpage, Tennessee. 

 

Second Creek of Cumberland River

Second Creek forms the border line for Districts One and Two.  Its head is at the junction of Districts: One, Two, Thirteen and Fourteen. 

 

Station Camp Creek of Cumberland River

Station Camp Creek runs through Districts: Six, Eleven and Twelve just N and W of Gallatin, the county seat of Sumner County, Tennessee. 

 

Sulphur Branch of Cumberland River

Sulphur Branch is located (to my knowledge) in District Five and empties into the Cumberland River just W of Coles Ferry. 

 

Trammel Creek

Trammel Creek enters Tennessee in the NW corner of District Fifteen with its head near the District Fourteen boundary.
