3, was fatally injured about 3am Sunday July 17, on US 31-E, 1.1 miles from Rock
Bridge Road near Bethpage. Key, according to investigating officers, was
driving at a high rate of speed when he missed a curve and ran off an embankment
on the opposite side of the road. The Westmoreland and Gallatin units of
the Sumner County Volunteer Ambulance Service arrived at the scene soon after
the accident. Both units assisted in Transporting the victim who was
pronounced dead on arrival at Sumner County Memorial Hospital in Gallatin.
Trooper Billy Mason of the Tennessee State Police and Deputy Jimmy Lambert of
the Sumner County Sheriff's Department investigated. Key, a graduate of
Westmoreland High School, was an apprentice roll tender at Donnelly Printing
Service in Gallatin. Key is survived by his widow, Mrs. Deborah Boren Key,
his father, Clyde Ray Key, Cookeville; his mother, Christine Key, Westmoreland;
one son Joshua Regan Key, Westmoreland; one brother, Jeff Key, Westmoreland; one
sister, Mrs. Bonnita Beasley, Westmoreland. The funeral was at 2pm Tuesday

Hardware until his retirement due to ill health. He is survived by his
widow, Mrs. Myrtle Ellen Mandrell; two sons, Joe Thomas Mandrell, Maryville and
William Ted Mandrell, Westmoreland; three grandchildren; a brother, Gordon
Hollis Mandrell of Westmoreland. The funeral for Mr. Mandrell was
conducted at 1pm Wednesday, July 20, at the Fairfield United Methodist Church.

Additional Information: (Obit) Donald Smith, 25, a resident of
Westmoreland was killed instantly when his gasoline tanker truck flipped and
burst into flames in Rutherford County on I-24 on Thursday morning Sept. 8.
Smith was a driver for Fleet Transport Co., of Nashville. The accident was
apparently caused by a motorist in a 1969 Cadillac who was either stopped or
traveling at a low rate of speed. Immediately after the wreck, Lynward
Elam, 55, McMinnville, was charged with driving without a license and driving
while intoxicated. Elam had been thrown from his auto but was not injured.
The car burned. Traffic was tied up over three hours on a portion of I-24
near the Beech Grove as a result of the 12:35am tragedy in the eastbound lane.
Friday, Sep 9, Rutherford County authorities filed second degree murder charges
against Elam in connection with the incident. The following day Elam
appeared before General Sessions Court Judge James A. Buckner, Murfreesboro, and
was bound over to the County Grand Jury. Elam waived a preliminary
hearing. He is being held in the county jail under bond of $3,500.
Smith, a 1970 graduate of Westmoreland High School, served with the U.S. Army
from 1972 to 1975, with one year of duty in Korea. His survivors include
his parents, Mr. & Mrs. James L. Smith, Westmoreland; two brothers, Tony Smith,
Westmoreland and Jerry Smith, Gallatin; two sisters, Mars. Larry Midkiff, Dundee
and Miss Kendra Smith, Westmoreland; a grandmother, Mrs. Lillie Williams,
Westmoreland. The funeral was at 2pm Friday, Sep 9, at Alexander Funeral
Home Chapel in this city, with burial in Bethpage Cemetery.
