Tax Assessment Rolls
Every year the people of Halifax County were assessed much like today, and had to pay taxes on their property. In Prospect for the years 1891-1947, these assessment records are available. These records not only show the approximate wealth of the heads of households in Prospect, but they are good when it comes to showing who is in the village, and fill in the gap between Census Records. Also in the Remarks section of these records for various people through the years it says things such as: Gone To Halifax, or Died in 1892, or something like that... So these records can be used to help determine when people died and when they left the village.
