Prospect Census Data

On this page is information dealing with Census taken in Prospect from 1791 to 1901. In the begining the Census usually gave the heads of households (1791, 1837 census). After 1871 all people in the household were accounted for, along with birth dates. In 1901 the whole birth date was given. The 1871-1901 Census are on forms created by Rose Casey.

1788 Examination of the Fishery at Prospect

This is a listing of all the inhabitants of Prospect on Monday the 9th of June 1788 who owned a fish lot. It lists the names of the fish lot owners and the make up of their families and the amount of hired men working for them.

1838 Census

This Census only shows the heads of Households, but it lists the amount of males and females under certain years of age, and the amount of people living in the house at that time. 1851 Census for Upper Prospect with Islands, etc.

This Census only shows heads of households and the amount of males and females between an age range.  This Census also included the village of  Blind Bay, Shad Bay, Prospect Bay, Terrence Bay, and Lower Prospect. This file is a Microsoft Excel file.

1861 Census

The 1861 Census of Prospect is a very large Census. Though it only lists the heads of families and how many males, females and then the total in family, for each abstract (6 in all) there is a total of 146 columns for information dealing with deaths between a certain date, and other statistical information. I have only included in this Census the name of the Head of Family, and the number of Males and Females and total in each home. 1871 Census

The 1871 Census pretty much shows the same as the 1881 Census, there isnt much of a difference. This Census would have included all the same places as the 1881 Census as well. It was taken by George Longard of Bayside.

The 1881 Census shows shows Heads of households, and all family members;, year of birth, age, marital Status, religion, and profession.  The Enumerator of this Census was George Longard of Bayside. The Census covers the areas of Dover, Bayside, Shad Bay, Prospect Bay, Prospect Village, and the Islands surrounding that area. When printing this data please drag the page dividers over so that all the information is on one page, the Census should print out in 16 pages.
