article: Isaak Herman Subak and sons (I.H.Subak a synové /J.H.Subak & Söhne) tannery (koželužna) factory in Třebíč founded end 18th century & closed in 1931, whose members live today in USA, England, Scotland and Austria, but they come regularly every year in their hometown. L'ancienne usine Subak a été dans les années quatre-vingt-dix reconstruite et transformée en logements. The former factory Subak was rebuilt in the 1990's and converted into housing. The new 29 housing development has contributed to bringing life back to the Jewish ghetto of Třebíč. The Třebíč Jewish cemetery with 3,000 gravestones has many well-known personalities like: rabbi Joachim Josef Pollak and Dr. Samuel Pollak; Jakob Kořatek, Dr. Simon Schuschny - who gave rise to a hospital in Třebíč. Story by Rudolf Beran below "..The Beran family had prospered in Brno - the textile factory, founded by my Great Grandfather, reached its peak under my grandfather, Alois, who employed more than 1,000 workers. We supplied khaki cloth to the Austrian Imperial army. Alois had two sons, Philip and Bruno below.. ..In 1905 Philip met and married Irene Subak, the daughter of a family of well-to-do merchants. Two children followed - my older sister, Minnie, in 1906 and myself in 1913.. continued below *picture: Irene +Philip on right, Bruno and their father Alois Beran "seated", Hermine and Rudolf, other members of the family and staff

Note: continued from above ..It must have been in this period that mother fell in love with Bruno and although as a young boy I was not aware of it, I was raised in a ménage-à-trois. Brno in this era was an important cultural centre and the sons and Irene could indulge their passions for music and art.. ..In 1935 Irene and Phillip were divorced and for the next two years Bruno and Irene travelled across southern France and Spain with his easel and paintbrushes..". Irene was clearly a dominating figure, as the family home in Brno was in her name and she had a considerable collection of artwork in her own right, including well known names of the Secession. Bruno and Irene fled from Europe in very exciting circumstances ahead of the German occupation of Paris and made their way to Canada and then USA. They were naturalized and Irene helped with the family finances, by setting herself up as a celebrity TV chef. The irony was, that she had never had to cook in earlier life, always having servants in the Brno homes. *see also The Life Of Bruno Beran by Rudolph Beran
