Velma was born to Effie Probart ( Emma's other sister) and her
father was Ephraim Leroy Hulse. Effie died when Velma was only 15 months, so
Grandma Emma raised her as her daughter. She was my dads cousin but he knew
her as his sister. She married Helmer Mortemsen Jorgensen on 2 Dec 1947 in
Elko, Nevada and had her children with him. Then she married James Atkins
and they lived in Wyoming. They are both buried by my parents and Grandma

"E L Probert Enlisted as a Private on 25 August 1862 Enlisted in Company Smith's, Citizen Soldiers Regiment Minnesota Union on 25 August 1862. Mustered out Company Smith's, Citizen Soldiers Regiment Minnesota Union on 01 October 1862

Regimental History Citizen Soldiery MINNESOTA During the Indian War of 1862-1865, a number of citizens were organized in a series of companies to counter this threat to the frontier. Captain, later Commander in Chief, Charles E. Flandrau was largely responsible for the forming of these units.

A number of these Citizen soldiers were actively involved with the campaigns of General Henry. H. Sibley (Ex-Governor).

The principle engagements were:

Battle of New Ulm, MN August 23, 1862 and August 26, 1862 Battle of Birch Coulie, MN September 2, 1862 Battle of Wood Lake, MN September 23, 1862 Battle of Big Mound, MN July 24, 1863 Battle of Dead Buffalo Lake, MN July 26, 1863 Battle of Stony Lake, MN July 28, 1863 1864 Campaign in Dakota Territory

The rosters of these companies are by the nature of the affair rather incomplete. However, Captain Flandrau supplied the state with a reasonable listing of those men who undertook these hazardous encounters.
