John and W.R. SMITH of Tyler Co, WV, guardians of two daughters of Perry PRATT and Hannah WEEKLEY

James Morris Smith was the father of John M. Smith. He married Catherine S. Wells, daughter of  William Wells, of  Stonehurst. (William Wells was a slaveholder but a friend of William Underwood. William named his son Wells, after Squire Wells. It so happens my parents bought the Wells farm in 1947, so I grew up in the Stonehurst House.) I looked in the 1850 Tyler County census for this family and found a child Walter, who was 2 at that time. Then in the 1870 census of Centerville District of Tyler County, Walter is listed still in his father's house. He is now 22 and occupation is laborer. Then I found him in a listing of James Morris Smith's children in family genealogy booklet. He is listed as W. Russell Smith who was born September 24, 1847 and died 1924. So I looked up Beechwood Cemetery and found -- W.R. Smith with correct dates.
