THE WILL OF JACOB WEEKLEY

In the name of God Amen I Jacob Weekley of the County of Shenandoah knowing the uncertainty of human life think proper to dispose (dispense?) of the property God has pleased to blefs (bless) me with in the manner and form following to wit my desire is that my children, William, John, Enoch, Elijah, Sally, Susannah, Nancy, Jacob, Joseph, Thomas, Robinson and the heirs of Isaiah dec'd all to have an equal part of my estate after my just debts is paid

except the last mentioned heirs and they to have only half as much as the above mentioned children out of my estate and Winifred one third part with the above mentioned equal parts and Catherine and Elizabeth the sum of one dollar in consideration of their having had a proportionable part of my estate all ready my desire is that my daughter Sally shall have the ceare of my daughter Susannah as long as they both may live, my desire is also that if any of my mentioned children should die without lawful ifsue (issue), that part of my estate shall return to the surviving ones that is to have an equal part of my estate knowing all other wish or wills heretofore made by me as witness my hand and seal this tenth day of April one Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty One.

"Luray, Virginia. December 15. - Calmly and patiently waiting for the end of life Frank Weakley, the veteran trout fisherman of the Blue Ridge, with less than ten years placing him over the century mark, is making other preparations for death.

Weakley's home is on the "Big Meadow", a plateau on top of the Blue Ridge, near the line between Page. Here he has spent all of his life, and has perhaps caught more trout in the numerous streams of that region than any half dozen men known in this section. About ten years ago Mr. Weakley had his coffin made in Madison County, making stipulations that the casket should not cost more than $20.

The casket was hauled to the Weakley home on a wagon. The veteran fisherman for more than half a century has been the guide for hundreds of anglers from Baltimore, Washington and Richmond.

He has been the inventor of more different kinds of alluring bait for trout than any angler in Virginia. His home for many years has been the meeting place of thousands of trout fisherman. His constant companion is his six-foot wide fireplace, where he recounts thousands of experiences in angling for trout in the Robinson River, the Rapidan River, the Big Hawksbill Creek, the Little Hawksbill Creek, Cedar Run, Rose River and the White Oak Run. He was a soldier in the Confederate Army, taking part in many of the battles with the Union Forces.

"Mrs. Frank Weakley"

"Mrs. Emma Susan Weakley ,aged 84, widow of B. Frank Weakley, who died July 11,1933, was one of the best known women of Page County. Her home on top of the Blue Ridge at the Brannon Place now owned by Philip Lamb has been a favorite resort with fisherman, hunters and travelers for half a century. The Page farmers who owned grazing lands on the ridge as well as members of their familes and many others have spent a night at the Weakley home and have enjoyed the exhilarating air and the superb cooking of the highly estimable old lady who is now in her grave. Her husband who died in recent years was an enthusiastic sportsman,kept a big pack of hounds and was an adept in the art of catching the elusive mountain trout. He was employed on hundreds of occasions to guide and act as mentor to lowland fisherman and gunners, who wished to seek game in the fastness of the Blue Ridge. Mr. Weakley died aged over 80.

The home of the couple stands right on the Skyline Drive. Many years ago it was in a forest of chestnuts. Now the chestnuts are destroyed by the blight and the house stands bare and unshaded, but the old time hospitality never failed while old Mr. and Mrs. Weakley were able to receive their guests. In addition to his fishing and hunting activities, Frank Weakley was employed as a herdsman and caretaker on the mountain farms. He drew a federal pension for service in the war between the states and was a liberal provider of all that the inner man could desire.

Mrs. Weakley had been living where she died for 51 years. The couple had twelve children of whom the majority survive including: Emmett Weakley of Fairfax; June Weakley and Acre Weakley, of near Kiblingers Store; Mrs Will Phillips, who moved from near Kiblingers Store to the home of her mother about a month before the latter's death; Len Weakley, of Vienna; Charles Weakley of Cumberland; Mrs Jarrell of East of the Ridge, and Earnest Weakley, of Middle River. Mrs. Weakley left 68 grandchildren and 61 great-grandchildren. A large crowd of people and about 30 automobiles went to the burial in the Tanner's Ridge graveyard. This was the first funeral procession that ever passed over the new Skyline Drive. Rev. Gird Cave conducted the service. The pallbearers were; Lester Seal, W.H. Miller, Ernest Thomas, Bob Lam, C.T. Taylor and Homer Finks.
