Thomas W. Tate was born 19 Jan 1799 in Tennessee and died 20 Oct 1837, probably in Tennessee. Thomas W. Tate married Isabell Boguir Sapp born 12 June 1802. Dates are from the Bible of their son, Benjamin Tate. We have very little information on Thomas W. Tate. Until recently, we thought that Ann Tate's father was actually named Jesse Tate as that is the name given on her death certificate, but the Thomas W. Tate name from Benjamin Tate's Bible predates her death and is given greater weight here. Also, Ann named a son Jesse Thomas Maples. Her husband's father was Jesse Maples, so if her father was Thomas Tate, she named this son after both his grandfathers. Each of Ann's brothers and sisters had a son named Thomas, but only Joseph had a son named Jesse. The naming pattren for Ann Tate Maples' children is 1. both grandfathers, 2. Ann's mother, 3. Ann herself, 4. James, the father. We have accepted that Ann's father was named Thomas Tate, not Jesse Tate.

It is said that Thomas Tate had brothers George, Henry, J.W., and James that were all living in Carroll County Tennessee in 1830, but we find no documented proof of this connection. There is a Thomas W. Tate living next door to a J. W. Tate and close neighbors to Henry Tate in 1830 Carroll Co. Tennessee. This census record shows Thomas W. Tate with two daughters under 5 years of age. The widow Isabell Tate is in Madison County, Arkansas house hold number 407 Kings River Township on the 1850 census. House hold number 406 is her daughter Ann Slover and husband Alfred Slover. The will of Henry Tate, September 1844, Carroll County, Tennessee names children Jesse, Lemuel and Mary Tate. Thomas is not named but he would have been dead by 1844, and his family was likely in Arkansas by that time. The search goes on...
