Absalom Coxsey, born 1779, North Carolina, died 1850, McMinn County, Tennessee is our earliest identified Coxsey ancestor. Absalom married Elizabeth Haile, born 1796 in South Carolina, 12 October 1815, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Absalom would have been age 35 in 1815 so it is possible he had another wife before Elizabeth. Absalom Coxsey census records place him in McMinn County Tennessee in 1830, 1840 and in Polk County, Tennessee in 1850. In 1850 wife Elizabeth and children Benjamin and Rachael L. are with Absalom. John B. Coxsey, living in Polk County in 1850 and later living in Carroll County, Arkansas in the same neighborhood as our Benjamin Coxsey is likely a son of Absalom. From the 1830, 1840 census records it is clear Absalom had 2 or 3 sons other than Benjamin and 5 daughters other than Rachael. We feel it is safe to assume that all the Coxsey families that migrated to Carroll County, Arkansas in the late 1800's were related, but the exact nature of the relationship has not been confirmed by our research.
