Edna Fullerton Clauson was kind enough to record some of her memories of her Grandmother. "She was sixty when I was born and I wonder if I will have any grandchildren born when I am sixty. There is a good chance of it as there are two sons who have small families. their idea of an ideal family may differ as to size though. (note added in 1982--we have 6 granddaughters, 6 grandsons and 1 great-grand-daughter)
Grandma Fullerton had nine children, the pill was an unheard of thing as were probably the many other conveniences of todays world. If she would have had some of them she may have well lived a few more years. But then, washing over a wash board in a tub, scrubbing the floor on ones hands and knees, was what helped them to keep their figures. If we today had to do our work like that we probably would not have to spend money on the trimming salons. so it was probably the best for them. Then we get back into the early years of this country when a wash tub was made of wood if we had one or they took the clothes to the creek to wash them. I wonder what they did when the creek froze over in the winter. Probably melted snow for water, and went smelly. No wonder we developed the habit of spring cleaning. a habit that too is unnecessary now, with electric sweepers and scrubbers, modern heating systems and so forth.
My memories of my Grandma are of fondness. I can see her now setting in that chair after her morning work was done, her handwork was crocheting, particularly I remember the ecru thread and the wide lace she made for a piano scarf. The medallions were about three inches across, some day I will try it. Grandma's Bible was always at hand and she often read it I know because there was no dust on it and it was worn. The rug on the floor, upon which the sunlight fell was a warm red pattern, something like the oriental rugs. There were no plants in the windows Grandma planted here out of doors in the spring and was more of a fruit and vegetable gardener than a flower gardener. Grandma was tall and lean in her older years. she wore her hair long and in a bun at the top. today a few women wear wiglets. I have one which is curls, but it is grayish and who wants to look older, unless it is someone who wants to grow up in a hurry, not me. I hope that I have done my growing up. I have been told to grow up and quit dreaming a few times. But a good part of life is behind me now."
