Philo is twin brother. Milo & Philo were twins. After the first few reunions
held at their parents home, the reunions circulated, being held at various homes
of family members. August 9th, the birthdate of the twins was selected as the
date for the family reunion and this custom continued until World War II, when
the reunion started being held on the Sunday closest to august 9th, each year
and this custom continues at present.
Res. Stockton, Fredonia, & surrounding country, settling in 1888 at 16 Houghton St., Fredonia. Farmer, he became a local Methodist preacher by taking courses at Alleghany College, Meadville, Pa. His certificate formally styled him a Deacon, but he was entitled to use "Rev.", as used thru the yrs. in the Fredonia Censor in connection with the various marriages he performed. Aurelia taught in a rural school (Pomfret Dist. #3) before her marriage and was fond of dancing in her youth-once wearing out a pair of shoes dancing all night. She later grew very religious and was the incentive for her husband's interest in the subject. As a young man just out of school, Milo went west (perhaps to Almon, his uncle, in Ohio?) while his twin brother, Philo stayed home. Philo became acquainted with Aurelia, then a young school teacher (she began teaching age 16) and wrote Milo of what a beautiful school teacher they had at home. Milo came back to see, and it was he who married her. Philo was fond of telling this story in his later years. Milo was ordained a Deacon of the Methodist Church at Meadville, Pa., 2 Oct 1881. He helped to build a church on old Plank Rd., So.Pomfret, & conducted services there for a number of years. Luther Leroy Pierce I, in helping to tear down this church, found a hammer which was lost during its construction. Milo Blodgett, Dist. #43 Pomfret, was Pomfret Overseer of Highways from 26 Feb 1877. Milo res. Central Ave., Fredonia 1884, where dau. Pearl was born. They next owned the West Hill Grocery & lived in a house where West Hill School now stands on Seymour St., though they did not own it. It was from this house that Aurelia (Allen) Russ, who died in Mass. was buried. They then moved to a house on West Main St., near Chestnut St., & Milo bought the land on Houghton St., of Alexander Houghton, the bachelor son of Judge Jacob Houghton, which was one of the last portions of the huge original Houghton Tract. In the summer & fall of 1888, Milo built the house at 16 Houghton St., and the family moved into it by Christmas 1888. Milo still owned land & a woods he had received from the estate of his father; lumber for the house came from that property, which was on the corner of Sodom & Plank Rds., So. Pomfret. The Blodgett home at 16 Houghton St. was for many yrs. a rendezvous for visiting ministers & church officials, several of whom had rooms designated for their use when they came. To entertain up to 20 at a time was quite usual, a& this number could be doubled during church conferences & conventions. Much of life centered around the "Quarterly Meeting". Clara Lenora Kelley also grew up in this blodgett family atmosphere. Milo at one time also owned the Houghton House on the West Main St. corner of Summer St., later owned & torn down by Luther Leroy Pierce I. Milo & Aurelia, together with their two unmarried children, are buried Greenwood Cem., Stockton, NY. Researcher: Barbara P.
