local First Baptist Church. Last rites were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the First
Baptist Church. The resident pastor Rev. Stanley E. Mudridge was assisted by

to information from Kim Barr, William was captured twice during the Civil War.
He appears on the register of Prisoners of War at Old Capitol Prison, Washington,

1863. Exchanged on November 1, 1864. Name appeared on roll of prisoners of War
paroled at Point Lookout MD, name signed by "x".
William married his brother Elisha's wife Emoline Wiles Porter after brother Elisha was killed in the Civil War in 1862. William served as Postmaster in Linney, Ashe County, NC, from September 10, 1895 stop March 7, 1903. An application for Pension from the State of North Carolina for Civil War service was prepared on June 9, 1909 at the Linney Post Office in Ashe County, NC. At the time William Porter was 73. The application states that William Porter enlisted in Company C, 26 Reg. NC State Troops on or about the 12th day of June 1861. The application also states that: "He is not able to do manual labor on account of extreme old age and general disability. At least three fourths of his physical strength is gone." signed by Marley Blevins, Physician. A preprinted portion of the form verifies that he does not own property with a value greater than $500. The application was approved "Fourth Class" by the Ashe County Board of Pensions. Application is on file at the North Carolina Department of Archives.
