was buried on 18 JAN 1677/78 in Bolton, Cumberland, England. Thomas Porter,

Some of the family appear to have been Quakers. A harmless letter from John
Dixon of Water Eng, Lowswater, yeoman, to Hugh Tickell, of Portingscale, yeoman,
being found on the highway near Cockermouth was carried to John Lamplugh and
Richard Toson, who bound the two over to appear at the Assizes, 29th January,
1661. The letter states that the next month's meeting is to be held at Quarrel
Hill (Quarry Hill) at Thomas Porter's (Calendar of state Papers, 1661-2, p. 263).
Thomas Porter was imprisoned in 1664 as a Quaker for not paying tithes (R. S.
Ferguson, Early Cumb. and Westd. Friends, p. 171).

Porter(44) Thomas Porter, second
son of William and Ellyn, succeeded. In 1562, on the death of William Porter,
rector of Plumland, Lancelot Walles was instituted, upon the presentation of
Thomas Porter of Alwardby, gentleman (N. and B., ii., p.119). In 1578 he held
the manor of Crosby and Allerby, meaning Crosby Aylward, High and Low Crosby
(Canonby) was a separate manor in a different parish., sometime the lands of
John Derwentwater, and late the lands of William Porter, father of the siad Thomas,
by homage, cornage, serjeant's food, seawake, and turnsilver, rendering per annum
11/8. He also held in the town of High Crosby two messuages and four oxgangs
of land, late Thomas Lowther's, by homage, fealty and suit of court, paying yearly
for cornage 9d., for seawake 1 1/2d., with serjeant's foor, etc.; in all 10 1/2d.
(Survey of 1578, quoted by Whellan).
He married Elizabeth, and it was apparently he who, having no child, made his wife joint tenant with him and she surviving afterwards married a younger brother of the Eaglesfields, in whose family Allerby continued, until Richard Eaglesfields, about 1690, sold it to Richard Lamplugh of Dovenby (N. and B., ii., p.154). Lysons says the family became extinct early in the 17th century. Researcher: Julia Harrison Harrison_jj@msn.com Parents: William Porter and Ellyn Bridges. Thomas
Porter(44) was born in Bolton, Cumberland,
England. He Researcher Julia H. JuliaH1108@aol.com. Porter (Portarius) is
a name obviously derived fromt he occupation of the fonder of the family, i.e.
the keeper of the gate. The bells on the family coat may be in allusion to his
duty to give the alarm, and the portcullis often used as crest carries out the
same idea.
In the Pipe Rolls Ó cumberland an entry occurs concerning Jordan the Porter and his payment of twopence towards a tallage at Carlisle, imposed in 7th Henry III. (1223-24). Tallagium Maneriorum -- Jordanus Portarius reddit compotum de ijd. de quadam placea in Carleolo. In thesauro liberavit. Et quietus est. The sheriff accounts for like payments fromt he same Jordan in 1226-27 and 128-29 respectively. I take it that Jordan was keeper of one of the city or castle gates, and may (especially if the office was hereditary) have founded a family called Porter. In 1578 James Porter was jailer of Carlisle Castle (Calendar of Letters and Papers, Henry VIII., vol. 4, p. 1828, quoted these Transactions, N.S., xii.,p.40). PORTER OF BOLTON AND ALLERBY. Alleby, alwardby, otherwise Crosby Aylwarde, takes its name from the original proprietor, who appears to have been in possession of his "cross place" prior to 1120, and to have been a man of importance. At any rate, according to the Distribution Cumberlandice, his son Dolphin was of sufficient standing to wed the sister of Waldeof, first lord of Allerdale below Derwent, and to get with her Applethwaite, Little Crosby, Langrigg and Brigham. In the 13th centruy Aylwardby was in the hands of the Derwentwaters, and in the inquisitio post mortem of Sir Thomas de Derwentwater in 1303 Thomas de Louthre was found holding, as free tenant, a moiety of the hamlet of Crosseby by homage, and the service of 5s. for cornage, to be paid to the lord of Derwentwater to the use of our lord the King yearly (W. N. Thompson, Transactions, N.s., iv., p. 293). John Lowther de aylwardby occurs in the list of Cumberland genry returned by the Commissioners of Henry VI. in 1433 (fuller's Worthies), and later in that century the daughter and heiress of Thomas Lowthere of Aylwardby married Thomas Porter of Bolton in Allerdale (Visistation of 1615, Harleain MSS.). Porter must have die abt 1740. At that time he had 500A.
100 to Calvert, Thomas, Benjamin, (as of 1740) .... 50 when of age to Joseph, Charles, John and 50 to Ann to go to son Nicholas upon her death. (See what happens when I try to do this from memory ....MUSH!) Son Benjamin died prior to 1768 and his 100 is missing from records. (Again not my work ... not a clue what happened to it.) But in 1768 Nicholas (son of Thomas and Ann) had 400A. This land was traces back to the father-in-law of Nicholas a Benjamin Brent who left it to his daughter Mary, wife OS Nicholas. (From this I would assume that Benjamin either had a lot of land ....to leave 400A to his daub). The problem with this abstract is that is calls her Mary Brent ...which would infer she was not married. However, this is an abstract and not well documented. NO SOURCES! What I can not tell from this is if Nicholas purchased the land prior to his marriage, but my hunch is no .... since his sib each recd 100A. How would Nicholas have the means to purchase 400A? The "son" Thomas Porter sells his land in Stafford Co, VA and moved to Rockingham Co., VA. Wonder if PKKratz@aol.com know of a marriage record for Thomas and Ann Nancy SHROPSHIRE? The estate of Thomas in 1773 is still holding 200A. Thus the assumption by these folks {this is for your information only!!!!} is that Thomas had 500 to start, 300 were distributed at his death in 1740 to the eldest sons leaving 200 A in 1773. Well, son John died in 1754 per PKKratz@aol.com. . That leave 150. This group "assumed" that Ann Calvert Porter was also was living in 1773 as but her son Nicholas had died leaving only the 400 A in his estate, which he acquired from his marriage to Mary Brent. Which leaves 50 still in the estate of Thomas Porter. (My terms). That leaves son Charles to inherit his 50, his mother's 50, his brother's John's 50 (seems John had no heirs). And his brother's Joseph's 50. (This is iffy, and needs to be documented as I have Joseph M. to a Jemima SMITH in 26 Feb 1756 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., VA (confirmed again by PKKratz@aol.com). So either Joseph's wife proceeded him in death and he had no heirs, or something is incorrect. Also this seems a little speculative in that Joseph would leave his property to one brother ....unless the other's were all deceased. Think some additional documentation is needed to prove just what happened. What I am working from ....(my eyes just rolled up into my head) states that the son Charles is listed in the Stafford C., VA tax list in 1783. BUT so is another unnamed Porter, which this group assumes is Calvert. I am not certain why Calvert wouldn't be named???? The son Charles must have died by 1790. His nephew ....The son of Nichola takes his widow to court over the land of "the son Charles". Charles son of Nicholas ends up with some 200A. Again without seeing the documents, this is speculation, but the group "thinks" that Charles son of Nicholas sold our NBP 133.5A, which is traced back to Benjamin Brent. Charles son of Nicholas also sells land to Dr. Peyton and does his brother John. Now the terms in this abstract change and say Charles son of Nicholas "gave" our NBP 133A. The Nicholas in Orange Co., VA is he son of Benjamin (brother of Thomas). This Nicholas is stated to have married a Sarah Hansford. Thomas, Benjamin and Samuel are reported to be the sons on Thomas I ... Not Nicholas as reported by PKKratz@aol.com . The Thomas I married a Jane. He lived in Stafford Co and owned property in Richmond (but not from Richmond) from cir 1688 to 1710. But this is very speculative without seeing the records. I have read other works by this group that jump to conclusions. However, be advised that if this is our Thomas I and Thomas, they both had what would appear to be in the range of 4000A. Thomas I it appears also had land in England that he sold to a ? King. Researcher: Melissa T. Alexander ma.da@gte.net Parents: Thomas Porter and Jane Unknown.
