"Okay this just in .... The person that wrote this died about few months ago (just our luck) his name was Paul Porter. Am trying to find out what I can about him, or if he has children etc. The last page that Paul Porter wrote is missing!

Paul Porter wrote:

"I do have some info. about the family, but it is mostly from memory of
hearing my father talk about them. Some dates from tombstones, etc. ...
Simion Hall Porter [was] born in Kentucky Mar. 14 1799. He later moved
to Orange Co. Indiana, which is near Vincennes. He did own land in
Orange Co. as early as 1830. My father (would have been 100 years old
today)told me that Pap Porter (Simion Hall) was a friend of Thomas
Lincoln (Abraham's father) and he frequently told of their rail
splitting days together...It appears that Simion Hall Porter sold out
and moved his family to Oscaloosa Ill. in Clay Co. Asa Porter studied
and became a doctor. Hall Porter [Simeon Hall Jr.] apparently belonged
to Co. H of 117th Ind. Infantry. Tom Porter became a doctor and
practiced in Chicago. Mary Porter, I have no knowledge of. James Linden
Porter became a brick maker.
" [About 1853]...Simion Hall and Nancy Richards...moved to Clay Co.
Ill. The family became disenchanted with the flat, poorly drained area
of Clay Co. and decided to move further west. James Linden Porter
married Mary Emmlia Moore in 1861. One child was born, Lydia Ella
Porter. The wife, Mary Emmlia died in 1863 or 1864. It was in this
general area that the Porter family became acquainted with an Oldham
family and they decided to form a wagon train and move to Mo. as a unit.
On March 31 1868 the Simion Hall Porter family, excepting Asa and Tom
who were established in their profession, and the Daniel Oldham Families
departed Clat Co. Ill. by wagon train and headed for the rugged hill
country of South west Mo. There were 10 wagons in the train. Both horses
and oxen were use to draw the wagons. The train passed through both St.
Louis and Springfield and on the 21st day of April 1868 They made camp
near Lawrenceburg Mo, a pre civil war trading post. It was from this
camp that the two families scouted the area and located tracts of land
that they could buy and proceed to build cabins for homes. Cupid was not
chained during this cabin building period, for Polly Ann Oldham the 20
year old daughter of Daniel Oldham had apparently been noticing James
Linden Porter......"

The deceased was an early settler of the Country. With a hardy & vigorous constitution, he endured the privations & difficulties peculiar to the first states of the new country. Enterprising & laborious, beyond many, he was engaged as a mechanic, skilled in his employment, in erecting many of our houses; and has survived most of those who were companions with him in trade.
For the last twelve years of his life, however, a severe disease preyed on his vigorous constitution, and at length has triumphed over it, and has numbered him among the many who "have gone the way of all the earth".
Liberal & benevolent to a fault, the deceased has been remembered in the long sickness he underwent, and will not soon be forgotten by those early acquainted with him; and his numerous relations will long feel the vacancy left by his departure. May the Christian's hope, which in his later days he pursued, be made the supreme object of their choice & their consolation, when they also are called to pass the valley of the shadow of death.
