Philip Porter, of Blackhow, gentleman, was the second son of Lancelot Porter of Usthwaite and Margaret (Cathericke ?) his wife. He was "of Usthwaite" in 1700, at which date Joseph Rodger of Low Place, Eskdale, owed him 10 pound, 10 shillings (Blackhow MSS.). He was "of Woodhow" in 1713, when his son Philip was born (Netherwasdale Reg.); " of NetherWasdale" in 1717, when he executed the will of his wife's aunt Mary Thompson, widow of John of Hewrigg, yeoman, Irton (Irton Wills); " of Foulsyke" Nether Wasdale, in 1722, when he supervised the will of his brother Lancelot (Irton Wills); also in 1725, when his son Nicholas died (Netherwasdale Reg.); "of Nether Wasdale" in 1729, when he made the inventory of Henry Caddy of Kirkland, Irton (Irton Wills), and in 1733, when he made the inventory of Robert Cubish of Santon.
In 1738 Blackhow and Townend were purchased, apparently in the name of his son Philip (Blackhow MSS.). He died at Blackhow, and was buried at Gosforth.

"Rachel Porter Case was born in Shelby County, Kentucky, "Sept. 20, 1810, died at her home in Saltillo, May 27, 1908, age 97 years, 8 months, and 7 days. Her parents, Nicholas and Nancy Porter, came to Washington county, Indiana when she was but 8 years old, locating on Lost River. About the age of 19 she was united in marriage to Washington CASE, to which union were born 14 children. Those who precede her, including her husband, who died July 17, 1882, were: Eliza, Sallie Ann, Becky Ann, William, Nicholas, Mary, Malinda, and an infant; and those who survive her are: Susan, Jacob, Hiram, Mariah, Barbara, and David. She also has two grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and one great great grand child, who survive her. Of the family of Nicholas and Nancy Porter, she was the last one. There were David, Polly, Sallie, Samuel, Asa, William, Barbara and Rachel. It was an old log house, where, Fred Baker now lives, where she confessed her savior, and was baptized into Christ at Lost River, by Tommy Greene, in 1828. When the church of Christ was at Carter's Creek, she put her membership with them, and later when the church of Christ was organized at Freedom, she put her membership there. She has been a faithful Christian for about 78 years and during her last years of feebleness she bore her suffering with much patience. And we must say, that Dave, her youngest child, has done all a child could to care for his mother during her last years. The funeral services were conducted at the family residence at 10:30 a.m. May 27th by the writer, assisted by Jas. M. Rolston, after which the remains were interred at the cemetery near by to await the summons of the Lord and Master. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from henceforth; Yea, saith the spirit that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them."
