He entered Harvard at the "foot" of his class because of the low status of his father, a weaver. He was ordained in 1750.

Dismissed from his first church in Ipswich in 1766 and, having lost his wife a few years earlier, he moved to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He returned to Mass. in 1771 leaving his oldest son to keep his farm. Settled in Ashfield in 1774. Preached til
death on Leap Day a few days short of his 100th birthday.

There is missinformation about Nehemiah in his grandson, Doric Porter's biographies. They say Nehemiah was a Presbyterian minister of Scotch origin. We know this to be wrong on both points as he was a Congregational minister of English origin.

The Worchester, Mass. Historical Society has diaries he kept dated 1749, 1752 and 1753.

Nicholas Brent Porter enlisted January 12, 1779 at Stafford Co, VA with Capt William Farrow during the Revolutionary War. He served for 11 1/2 months as a private, and 13 1/2 months as a Sergeant Major, and was discharged in 1781. During his enlistment he fought in the battle of Cowpens, South Carolina. After the war, he worked on the estate of his mother's cousin, William Brent, and later at the estate of another cousin, Valentine Peyton. He lived there until about 1792 when he moved to KY where he was with General Wayne for about three years. He married Nancy Hall, daughter of David Hall, on 24 February 1796. The Porters lived in KY until about 1819 when they removed to IN.
The civil records of the time indicate they resided in Washington Co, IN, but the Porters were enumerated in the census of Orange Co. Later, many of Nicholas' children did live in Orange Co. Nicholas did not seem to leave an estate when he died, and land records to not indicate that he ever owned property in either county. It is that that his parents were Mary Brent, daughter of Benjamin Brent, and Nicholas Porter, who is thought to be the son of Thomas Porter and Ann Calvert. The children of Nicholas, according to the obituary of his youngest daughter who died in 1908, were David, Polly, Sallie, Samuel, Asa, William, Barbara and Rachel. There seem to be no records to indicate there ever was a son name Samuel, and it is possible that this child is mis-named in the obituary and should have been called Simeon. There are many legal documents showing business transactions between Simeon Porter and the known children of Nicholas B. Porter.
