He married Margaret Mary "Bigmom" Barry in Jersey City, Hudson Co., New Jersey, April 10, 1942. Margaret was born in New Jersey August 19, 1920. Margaret was the daughter of Joseph Timothy Barry and Mary J. "Nana Barry" Davern. Margaret died September 16, 1996 in Sarasota, Sarasota Co., Florida, at 76 years of age. Her body was interred September 19, 1996 in North Arlington, Bergen Co., New Jersey.
Matthew was a relative of immigrant John Connachan October 23, 1923. According to the Ellis Island records, John Connachan and his family arrived in America aboard the ship "Columbia". Their destination was 229 Blvd., Bayonne, New Jersey where his sister Mary (Connachan) Johnston was living. His next nearest relative was his brother Hugh Connachan in Bathgate, Scotland.
