The Ancestors of Vickie Beard Thompson

Notes

Nathan H. HUFF Sr.

NOTES: He was married first to Eliza Jane Wolf, then he was either married are living with Polly Ann Jones Loftis, then he was married to a widow by the name of Louisa C. Camern. This widow filed for a pension for the service of both Mr. Camern and Nathan Huff, who fought in the Union Army during the Civil War. Some sources say he died in 1897 and some say in 1901. I think I will send for the pension record and see if that says when he died it should. According to some family traditions Nathan was the meanest man in Tennessee. That could be true because some of the stories I have heard about his son Samuel H. Huff. Apparently Samuel was the meanest man in Tennessee and Kentucky. He must have taken after his father.

COURT RECORDS: Jackson County, Tennessee
State vs Nathan Huff ; pages 20, 21, 43, 73, 108, 167, 276 & 364; Jackson County Minutes, Circuit Court Minutes, Civil & Criminal Courts; Vol A Sept 1872 thru Jan 1875; Roll # 12 Sept 1872 to Sept 1876 A & B; Nathan Huff alias Tosh Huff indicted for the murder of Thomas J. Meaddows. (happened on 31 Jan. 1872) indicted by grand jury 12 Sept 1872, for 1st degree murder. Bond set for $4000.00. I can't figure out why he would have went to Carthage (Smith County.), but he was before Judge S. M. Fite and also taken to Flynns Lick (Jackson County). I know he lived in Flynns Lick, and I guess it depends upon how they ran the Court System then. Very Confusing..... He was in Carthage after the indictment and by 18 Sept. 1872. By Sept 15, 1873, the case was dismissed because James W. Meadows (father of the dec'd) would not appear to prosecute. James was charged with the Cost. (Another case which happens earlier.) You said something about why Polly may have left Nathan, this might have been why, but something else I found before I found this was in another, older Rule Docket book was a page that states: Mary Huff vs Nathan Huff Divorce Bill - Pauper; Bill filed 3 June 1867; Copy and spa to answer issued to sheriff 4 June 1867; Spa to answer returned executed by delivering a copy of bill & summoning deft as commanded 4 June 1867 W. C. Purdell, Sheriff Attachment issued June 1867 to J. Roberts, Deputy Sheriff; Attachment returned nothing found this the 5 August 1867 J. Roberts, Deputy Sheriff Ended August Term 1867; I think this has to be Mary (Polly), and even later on, in 1869 Nathan is being sued by R. A. Cox, Clerk & Master of Chancery Court (Case folder found in basement of Courthouse also on film) for the costs of this divorce, along with other cases they had tried for him. Among the cases mentioned: "by Judgement rendered in said court at August Term 1867 for costs of suit in the case of Mary Huff against said Nathan Huff ............ for judgement recovered before Thos D. Cassetty Justice of the Peace in favor of Gailbreath on the 7th of Nov 1851........assigned and trasnferred on 11 Jan 1869 to your orator, said Nathan Huff is insolvent and nothing can be made out of him........... Cox goes on to state that "said defendant Huff is a quirky unreliable fellow very much averse to paying his honest debts and your orator has reasons to believe that he will unless prosecuted by your honors weits of attachment & injunctions dispose of his interests in said land as to defeat your orators only remedy against him." (the land lies on Andersons branch of Flynns Creek in Dist #11---where Nathan Huff now lives..(Received this info from Jodie Bowman Chinoy email: Jodie1954@twlakes.net 6 Jan 2002.)

CENSUS RECORDS: 1880 Jackson County, Tennessee film #448785,

Mary Ann JONES

NOTES: She was 17 in 1850 married in the census year to Labon Loftis.

NOTES: I could not find her and Labon in 1860 Jackson County, Tennessee. I also could not find her or any of her children in 1860.

NOTES: What is Polly's story, when did Labon die or leave? In about 1864 or 1865 she up and marry's Nathan H. Huff. Who according to his own descendants was the meanest man in Tennessee. She had at least 4 children with him and when her baby daughter Elvira Huff was tiny she left Nathan and took Elvira and her 2 Loftis daughters Susan & Mary and went to Kentucky in about 1872. When did she go back to Tennessee? Did she stay in Kentucky until after Nathan Huff died in 1898? She was buried at New Salem Cemetery in 1909 in Jackson county, Tennessee. Polly was the mother of at least 9 children.

NOTES: Received an email 6 January 2002, from Jodie Bowman Chinoy and she has found a divorce decree between Nathan Huff and Mary Huff his wife which was first filed on 3 June 1867 and was mentioned again as Nathan not having paid for the court cost for this divorce on 11 January 1869. If the divorce really happened in 1867 and the court is still trying to get payment for court cost in 1869, why is Mary (Polly) still with Nathan in 1870? Also Mary (Polly ) has 3 more children with Nathan, Nathan Jr. in 1867, Samuel H. in June of 1869 and her last child Elvira Elizabeth in February of 1871 and sometime shortly after that and before February 1873 she has left Tennessee and had gone to Crittenden County, Kentucky.

CENSUS RECORDS: 1 June 1880 Union, Crittenden, Kentucky film #1254410, page #2, family #17/17,
She is living with John and Susan Fritts and is listed as hired in the house. She also says she is only 48 years old. She also says she is a widow but I believe she was divorced from Nathan Huff, who was her husband after Lafe Loftis. She says that her and her father was born in Tennessee but did not say were her mother was born.

NOTES: Found her living with Elijah and Susan Loftis Haney in 1900 in Lyon County, Kentucky. She was going by the name Polly Keens so she had apparently married again. I have never found even one marriage record for her. She was listed as age 70 born Feb 1830, mother of 12 children but only 10 still living and a widow. I only have the names of 9 children did the others die young?? (June 15, 2000)

NOTES: I found out she died in Jackson County, Tennessee and was buried at the New Salem Cemetery. Go north towards Gainesboro you will come to Flynn's Lick just as you pass the little store there is a road to your right that is the New Salem Road go down that road about 4 miles are so you will go past the sign that says Jones/Huff Cemetery go about 1 more mile and on your right setting on a hill is the New Salem Cemetery. She is buried in the middle of the cemetery towards the back, next to the trees by her daughter-in-law Filena Loftis and some of her Loftis grandchildren. There are a whole bunch of Jone's buried there also, her brothers and their families. Her marker says Polley Ann Loftis mother of J. M. Loftis. A tender mother and a faithful friend. With her birth and death dates also. I took a picture of the marker on Sunday 17 October 1999 at about 9:30 am. Also pictures of quite a few other markers. It was really great to be able to find her and so many others of my family.

NOTES: I sent for her death certificate 29 Oct 1999. They sent my check back she was not listed in their state wide index. Maybe she died in Kentucky and they took her back to Tennessee to bury her. (17 Nov 1999)

COURT RECORDS: Jackson County, Tennessee Found in a ledger of deaths lists the following: Polly Huff died 28 Dec 1909 in Flynns Lick, age 75, married, cause "old age". (Info received from Jodie Bowman Chinoy 3 Jan 2002)

In the case Carel A. Jones was deposed. He was asked if he knew whether Elias Jones was dead. He answered yes that he saw him buried, he died in Union County, Illinois 24 Sep 1850 and made his mark X. (Jackson County, Tennessee Roll #67 Chancery/Circuit Loose Records Dowell-Draper S.
