The Ancestors of Vickie Beard Thompson

Notes

Chief Openchancanough

In the south, when the early European settlers arrived in what is now Jamestown, Virginia, local Native Americas, loosely confederated under the Chief Powhatan, were initially cooperative; however, the Europeans quickly made it clear that they planned to extend settlements onto Native America land. On March 22, 1622, the Indians under Openchancanough, Powhatan's successor, attacked the English settlements, and 350 colonist died. The colony survived, however, and retaliated in force. The following decade saw continued warfare, followed by a tenuous peace. On April 18, 1644, another attack by Openchancanough almost destroyed the growing colony. Nearly 500 settlers were killed. The war ended in 1646 when the governor, Sir William Berkeley, captured Openchancanough. (From Encarta 2000 CD)

Cleopatra

She was sister to Pocohontas and youngest daughter of Chief Powhatan.

Chief Powhatan

HISTORY: His real name was Wa-Hun-Sen-A-Cawh. He was chief of the Powhatan confederacy of Algonquian tribes, in what is now Virginia at the time the English first settle there in 1607. He was father of Pocohontas. I am not sure who came up with his birth date or death date. I don't know of to many Indians that far back who knew when they were born or anyone who knew for sure.

Winganuske Matatiske

She was the mother of Pocahantas and maybe also of Cleopatra. Chief Powhatan had many wifes.

John ROLFE

He was a widower when he married Pocahontas. He was killed in a indian massacre in Virginia.

Pocahontas

Her real name was Matoaka which means the playful one. She changed her named to Rebecca when she married John Rolfe. She died of smallpox when she was getting ready to leave England and come back to America.
