NOTES: He was sheriff of Christian County, Kentucky when he died. He was killed by two black men while riding in a wagon with his son John Jared. The two black men were hung.

HISTORY: Christian County, Kentucky History -1886-
Finis H. RENSHAW is one of the most substantial farmers of this section of the county. His present farm of 232 acres is beautifully situated in a valley between a row of hills, and high land on either side. Mr. RENSHAW was born in Christian County, 8 May 1829, and is the eldest child born to Reed and Lucetta (CLARK) RENSHAW. The father was engaged in the butcher trade in early life, but in later years has devoted his attention more to farming pursuits. He was a Magistrate for many years and is yet living in Christian County. The parents of our subject were blessed with eleven children, of whom eight are now living : F. H., Luretha A. wife of James W. WOOSLEY; James C. and Eliza M., twins the latter married W. H. WOOSLEY, now deceased; Sophronia E. married John W. JONES; Amanda wife of James YANCY; Adelia wife of W. T. WILLIAMSON, and Joseph R. RENSHAW. Our subject received his early schooling in this county, afterward attending the Bethlehem Academy, in Caldwell County, and also institutions of learning in Trigg County. At seventeen years of age he commenced teaching school, and was thus engaged for several years. He has been active in the temperance cause having been a member of various organizations of that kind. He is a Republican politically, and has filled various smaller offices. He married Lavina J. WOOSLEY a daughter of Samuel S. WOOSLEY an old resident of Christian County. This union has given six children, of whom five are now living : Franklin P., Gustavus A., Ella E., married William DIUGUID; Herschel G., Samantha L. wife of Washington DIUGUID; and Mahlon M. deceased.

She was 17 in 1850.

She is not mentioned in her fathers Will in 1875.

She was 47 in 1880.

She was the mother of six children.

HISTORY: Samuel came to Christian County, Kentucky from Halifax County, Virginia in about 1833 and he obtained his lands from the Indians. The land was where the George Watts, place now is. He was buried in the Cephas Watts home Cemetery. The graves are on the right side of the highway near the road that leads from Sinking Fork to Gracey. I took picture of marker 19 July 2001.

29 Oct 1844, James W., Elvira A., infants of Samuel S., and over 14 years of age, came and made choice of said Samuel S., as their guardian, and on motion of said Samuel S., he is appointed guardian of Wilson H. and Lavina J., his children under 14 years of age, and being sworn, said Samuel S., entered into bond of $800.00 with Moses Woosley and James T. Woosley approved of as security.
page #525 ---- 31 July 1848, As guardian of my infant children by my former wife Nancy Woosley, formerly Nancy Francis, I have to report that what estate they are entitled to is in the state of Virginia, and that nothing belonging to said children has come to my hand, Samuel S. Woosley.

He was 50 in 1850 living in Dist #1, Christian, Kentucky.

Samuel's WILL, was written 2 June 1876 and was probated 17 July 1876. He mentions daughters: Sarah Ann Woosley, Mandy J. Woosley, Elviny Woosley, Vera Renshaw and Catherine Woosley. Sons: James W., Wilson H., William W., George W., and Jessy Woosley. The executors were Finis H. Renshaw and Jessy Woosley and the witnesses were J. W. Owen and R. H. May.

OBITUARYS: He died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Leslie Smith in Gracey. I have a copy of the obituary written by his cousin Polk Cansler. He left three daughters surviving him: Mrs Leslie Smith of Gracey, Mrs. Emma Boyd of Lexington, and Mrs. Jim Grissom of Hopkinsville. Also two sisters Mrs. Luretha Woosley of Sinking Fork and Mrs. J. W. Yancy of Hopkinsville.
