HISTORY: Here is the section on Zachariah Edmondson that is in the Hardin County, Illinois Past and Present book. It is an article from the Hardin County Independent Newspaper, dated Jan 31, 1935. Here goes, Zachariah Edmondson lived at Gentry’s Landing about nine miles north of Cave-In-Rock. He was born in Martin County, Indiana March 17, 1848. He was the son of Grayson and Jane Riley Edmondson. The third of eight, having 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He spent his childhood with his parents in his native state. In 1868, at age twenty, he was married in Davies County, Indiana to Sarah Elizabeth Pruett, who was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Pruett. Their early married life was spent on a farm in Indiana but as Mr. Edmondson had an inclination toward trapping and fishing, they left the farm and commenced life on a houseboat on the Ohio River. During the fourteen years spent on the river, he also was employed much of the time working lumber. After seventeen years of marriage, death invaded the home which was at the time at Maunie, Illinois, and Mrs. Edmondson was buried there. To this union were born four sons and two daughters. The sons were John T., who died at Carmi, Illinois, W. H. (my great-grandfather) of near Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, Harve of Kuttawa, Kentucky and Newt of Cave-In-Rock, Illinois. The daughters were Mrs. Bell Scott of Cave-In-Rock, and Mrs. Julia Cochran of Rosiclare, Illinois. After the death of his wife, Mr. Edmondson left the river, moved to a farm about a mile and a half from Dycusburg, Kentucky where he lived only one year. Then he moved to Ford’s Ferry and from there to Marion, Kentucky. In 1887 he married Emma Richards and they lived together for a short time until he was again alone. In 1893 he married Mrs. Mary Butler. She had two children at this time. Thomas Butler of Rosiclare, Illinois and a daughter, Mrs. Josie Yates of near Kuttawa, Kentucky. Four children were born to this union and all died young. About 1905, the couple moved from Weston, Kentucky to Hardin County, Illinois to a farm near Cave-In-Rock, Illinois. He became a member of the Methodist Church after attending a revival at Hopkins Chapel while living near Cave-In-Rock, Illinois their son “Zack” was killed by falling timber. In 1913 they moved to Carrsville, Kentucky where he found employment as a carpenter and shoe repairman. They then returned to Rosiclare, Illinois where he worked at the cobbler’s trade. On Aug. 16, 1930 Mrs. Edmondson died. After that he lived with his son W. H. Edmondson near Gentry’s Landing. I know that he is buried at the Old Brown Cemetery. I Can not remember where Mary is buried at. Think she is there also, but will check with my sister tomorrow. We have a picture of little Zack here somewhere. Also at my fathers home is a picture of little Zacks monument. That will take awhile to find. Zachariah Edmondson was my mother’s great–grandfather. W. H. Edmondson’s homestead is still standing, and lived in. (Info received from Libby Barrett January 2004)
