My Third Trip to Pommern, Kashubia, West Prussia, Gdansk and Marienburg
Aug. 29 - Sept. 7, 2005
Marienburg, fortress of the Teutonic Knights
Planning
I planned five trips around the county over one week. At each village I photograph the graveyard, the church, if there is one, and a few shots of the village itself, and then onto the next town.
I drove (with a driver) 1300 miles, took 1976 pictures, and visited 105 villages. I have two SD cards for my camera. One (256 MB) holds around 1000 pics and the other (512 MB) about 2000. These pics go onto my website (www.geocities.com/schlochau)
September is a nice time, weatherwise, to see Poland. It is also harvest time. This is the first time I flew with LOT, the Polish airline. The plane from Warsaw to Gdansk was the nicest I have ever
flown on. My driver said it is because many dignitaries are coming to Gdansk for the 25th anniversary of Solidarity.
The view of Warsaw from the air
My flight took me from Minneapolis to Chicago, Warsaw, and Gdansk. This is the airport in Warsaw. There is an observation deck on top where you can watch the planes take off and land. At the far end you can see they are enlarging the terminal.
Two views of Gdansk from the air
This is the airport at Gdansk.
I stayed at the Zaborski Inn near Lesno (www.zaborski.info).
I use an old Schlochau map from 1936, and a Hoefer Verlag map with German and Polish town names on it.
Half way between Karthaus and Berent in West Prussia is
this tower called the Thurmberg, 329 meters above sea level.
