BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN GEORGE PFALZGRAF: John Jacob Pfaltzgraff, from Niederbroenn, Alsace, France. Anna Margaretha, nee Pfaltzgraff, daughter of John Jacob Pfaltzgraff and his wife Greta ___________, b. 9-22-1695, Alsace, France. Johann Jacob Cuntz/Kuntz, Sr.: "In Niederbronn, Bas Rhin, Alsace, France, he was a shoemaker. Anna Catharina Muller married Johannes George Kuntz, born 1665/1655; their son married Anna Margaretha Pfalzgraf. Arrived in America in Phila from Rotterdam on ship "Charming Nancy" on Nov 9 1738. His wife, Anna Margaretha Pfalzgraf, died at sea. Of the 412 passengers on that ship, 250 died! The story is written in Annette Burgert's "Eighteenth Century Immigrants from the Northern Alsace". Also a writeup in "The Palatine Immigrant", Winter 1990/91, page 180, incl a sketch of the ship. Anna Margaretha's death at sea is quite well documented. "According to several records, including those of the Oley Hill Church, Berks County, Anna Margaretha Pfalzgraf died at sea on the voyage to America with her husband, Johann Jacob Kuntz, in 1738; she died in childbirth with an unnamed child. The Alsatian (France) records show that all of Johann Jacob Kuntz's children were born in Neiderbronn, Alsace, France, just over the border from Germany." JOHN GEORGE PALTZGRAFF first arrived in Philadelphia on 9-11-1732 on the ship “Pennsylvania Merchant” along with a John George Kuntz. This is our George and it seems to me that this is evidence that these two families were closely connected. John George Paltzgraff returned to Germany with his in-law, Phillip Emmert, to settle some family business and they returned to Philadelphia on the ship “St. Mark” on 9-26-1741. His name was spelled Pfalzgraf on the ship passenger list. We know that our George was over 16 years of age in 1732 when he first arrived. If he was a son of John Jacob and Greta, I believe he should have been born about 1690-1710. His wife was Anna Maria Barbara Kamp(-en), baptized 10-6-1715, daughter of Kaspar Kamp and Anna Catharina Franck. They immigrated between 1715 and 1717. I haven’t found the record yet. I don’t know how old George was when he died. His will was probated in 1759. His wife, Barbara, married (2) a man named Leonard Drumbower (several variants of this name).
