Note: for all countries and localities, the mother tongue is the native language of that country or locality unless otherwise specified. Polish will be the language of any birthplace given singly as Poland, Posen, or Warsaw, or dually as Russia Poland, German Poland, or Austria Poland; however, dual locations that are reversed, such as Poland Austria, will be assumed to be from the last country given, and will be the given language of that country, unless otherwise noted. See Transcriber's Notes for further information.
Information given in italics is generally used to indicate that that is exactly what was written, but is most likely a error or does not match other information given for that individual.
It is important to realize that this is a transcription based on what the enumerator originally wrote down the date the census was taken, and when you go to the original census you may not agree with what I have transcribed. A common example is that many times you may see "Na" or "Un" in the citizenship columns, which I have not given, because I believe from looking at the census that someone wrote it in later. This is also true when I have left the relationship column blank for an individual and there is actually information written in. I believe it to have actually been left blank when the enumerator was at the residence. Some of this is subjective and it is my choice to present it this way.
Much of the census on microfilm can be difficult to read, to put it best. I have used brackets to show what may have been written, but I am unsure of. A slash is put in to separate bracketed letter or letter combinations that are possible; for example, B[e][r/z]a can be either Bera or Beza, and K[wie/uri]cinski can be either Kwiecinski or Kuricinski. Names that have bracketed letters that are not separated by a slash are read simply by ignoring the brackets. Names that are entirely in brackets are my "best guess" and should not be taken as being totally reliable. When periods are used instead of letters or numbers, I cannot accurately determine the actual writing. I have used as many periods as there are letters or numbers, as far as I can determine. Occasionally, names will be given as mostly bracketed periods, or in extreme cases, a single question mark in brackets if there is no way I can decipher it.
There is standardization of information. Spelling errors have been ignored, i.e., when a location such as Galicia has been spelled as "Galicija", Illinois as "Illinous" or Eden (N.Y.) as "Edden" I have given the correct spelling. Individual names have been mostly left as was written, but common names such as Ida, John, or Henry will never be given as "Jda", "Johm", or "Henrey", even though that is what it looks like (the first one would be an error on the part of the transcriber, and the second and third an error on the part of the enumerator). Some names, such as Heddwig, Lauretta, Berny, or Juanna are probably errors and should have been Hedwig, Loretta, Bernie, and Joanna respectively, but will be given as is, as I am acknowledging the alternate spelling. Last names will not be subjected to the same standardization as the first names have been. As a result, some as given may not make too much sense. About the only time I will "standardize" a last name is when the latter w is indistinct, and looks similar to a u or n, but makes more sense to be a w. I will then transcribe it as a "w" and not put brackets around it. This would apply to names such as Wisniewski or Borkowski. It is not my intent to correct all errors, indeed, it would be impossible, with the legitimate variations in first and last names. You may go to the Transcriber's Notes page for a more detailed explanation of the standardization rules and exceptions.
