From Julian HIGGINS (GR 2007): Samuel " married Mary Ann E Silk (1099),
daughter of Mary Hannah Silk (1101), in Sep 1889 at Cambridge. Samuel and his
wife appear on the 1891 census living at 9 Guildhall Place, Cambridge. They
were lodging with his wife's mother who was a widow, and 2 of her half
sister's, Emily and Clara. Living with them was also Pearson Silk, who was
recorded as 4 years old and a grandson of the head of household. Presumably
therefore, he is Samuel's wife's son. He may or may not be Samuel's. This will
need further investigation. Samuel was a labourer at this time. Mary Anne's
mother, Mary Hannah Powter was a Bedmaker and her daughter Emily a bookleaver
(?). Mary Anne was a charwoman. In the 1901 census Samuel and his wife are
still living at 9 Guildhall Place. He is now the head of the household, and his
mother in law and one of his wife's half sister's Emily, is no longer with
them. Clara is still living there however, and working as a charwoman. Also
living with them is a son John Allpress, age 14 who is an errand boy. The age
makes it possible that this is the same child recorded in the 1891 census as
Pearson Silk. It can be rpesumed therefore, that Samuel is either his natural
father or he has adopted him. Samuel was working as a Brewers Drayman at this
time, and his wife Mary Anne was a college help.
