John and his family were admitted to the St. Ives Workhouse, St. Ives,
Huntingdonshire on Thursday 13 March 1851 . They were discharged on Friday 11
April 1851. In the intervening period they completed the 1851 Census held on
the night of 30 March 1851 .
At the weekly meeting of the St. Ives Board of Guardians held in the Board Room
in the Workhouse on Wednesday, 12 May 1852, a resolution moved by Mr. William
Cole and seconded by the Reverend J. A. Tillard was passed that the sum of £10
be allowed for the emigration to Adelaide of John Bath and family, then
residing at Swavesey in the St. Ives Union. The "... sum was to be charged to
Swavesey, being the Parish of the Settlement of such poor persons and that
application be made to the Poor Law Board for their order therein." . This was
a reasonably regular practice at the time as it was cheaper in the long run for
the Parish to pay for the emigration of pauper families to the colonies than to
continue to support them over a long period.
On 4 October 1852 the family of John and Elizabeth Bath left Liverpool, England
on board the ship Shackamaxon for the free colony of South Australia. The ship
arrived in Adelaide on 19 January 1853 . It was a difficult and unpleasant
passage, as of the 696 passengers who embarked in Liverpool for the voyage, 63
of them, of whom 58 were children under the age of 14, died en route . Most of
the children died from Scarletina (Scarlet Fever), while the adult deaths were
mainly from Dysentary and one possible suicide. Fortunately none of the deaths
were from the Bath family. Two of the children attended the school run by James
Fawsett during the passage. Fawsett reported that Joseph, aged 12, could read
and write, and William, aged 8, could do neither. Fawsett went on to comment
that Joseph "now reads well, writes middling, ciphers in addition. Very
irregular in his attendance, partly from illness". About William, he wrote
"Very irregular in his attendance; no excuse for it; & no progress" .
