Retired as park keeper at Wanstead Park
PARK-KEEPER FOR 45 YEARS
MR G. PAVELEY OF WANSTEAD
After patrolling Wanstead Park almost daily for over 45 years, Mr George
Paveley, of 21, Grove-road, Wanstead, still thinks its attraction unbeaten by
any other park to his knowledge!
Mr Paveley who is in his 73rd year, has just retired after creating a record
for length of service as park-keeper at Wanstead Park. His association with the
Park extends to well over 60 years, for his father, the late John Paveley, was
a gardener there when it was still a private residence owned by Earl Cowley.
Born at Royden, Essex, Mr Paveley came to Wanstead at the age of ten years and
entered the service of the Epping Forest Committee when he was 25 years old.
Except for nine days holiday each year and a day "off" each month, he has
remained at the Park ever since.
In an interview Mr Paveley, whose health is still exceptionally good after the
healthy open-air life he has led, told an "Express and Independent"
representative that the Park was little different to-day from the time when it
was first opened nearly fifty years ago. "The only change" he remarked, "is
that we did not get the number of visitors then that we do now".
"Of course, all round the park were open fields at that time. There was no
Overton Drive or Northumberland Avenue. But as for the Park itself, I don't
think it is at all spoiled. It is still the prettiest one I know," he said.
Mr Paveley's duties left him little time for outside activity but he attended
Wanstead Parish Church frequently. Since 1877 he has been a member of the
Wanstead (No. 3659) Court of the Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society,
and for 35 years has been a member of the "British Queen" Slate Club.
Just before his retirement he was the chief figure in a very pleasing ceremony
in connection with the event, when he was presented with an arm-chair by his
colleagues and a hearth-rug by local residents who
appreciated his loyalty in the performance of his duties.
Members of the Valentines Swimming Club, who use the Park lake for their
activities, have also subscribed to present him with a handsome umbrella.
He has also received many messages if congratulation and wishes for a happy
retirement for himself and his wife, Mrs Paveley.
