From Jim Forson (2002): In 1891, William Frier purchased a piece of ground
adjacent to the Golfer'sRest from Lady Cathcart, owner of the Cluny estates.I
quote from the legal documents as follows :-
'recorded in the division of the General Register of Sasines applicable to the
county of Edinburgh 20th March 1891 being part and portion of the lands
and Barony of Braid lying within the Parish of St Cuthberts and the county of
Edinburgh, and the whole buildings and erections of whatever description
on the said piece of ground fued to Mrs May McKay or Brown and Lindsay Goldie
Ross along which it extends 100 feet or therein.'
The Golfer's Tryst was built on this piece of ground by William Frier. Prior to
this the only building at the Braid Hills was the Golfer's Rest.
Lindsay Ross was the first professional to be appointed at the Braid Hills. He
was a native of St Andrews, born in 1862 and his speciality club was a 'Patent
Angle Plate (Aluminium) Face and Horn combined'. Lindsay Ross remained
professional at the Braid Hills until 1909, when he moved to Sutton Coldfield
Golf Club. The duties of the professional in those days included the title of
greenkeeper.
The Golfer's Rest was built in 1890 and the Golfer's Tryst in 1891, both as
purpose built golf clubhouses with shop and tearoom. The Golfer's Rest or
Gourlay's Tea Rooms as it had become known prior to the Second World War, then
became a private dwelling house purchased by Mr and Mrs Proctor
