Filleigh

Charlotte Joslin was baptized at the parish church in Filleigh in 1834. Her older brother William, and her younger sister Ann were also baptized her. Her parents, Robert Bird Joslin and Mary Ann Adams, were married at the church in 1832.

It wasn't until my trip to Devon that I solved the "mystery" of where Charlotte was born. Various sources had given her birthplace as Filleigh, Lapford or Chittlehampton. Her baptism is not listed in the transcriptions of the Filleigh Parish Registers published by the Devon & Cornwall Records Society. I had suspected she had been born in the area called Filleigh outside Lapford - but I couldn't find any record of the family being in the area at the time of her birth. While at the Public Records Office in Exeter, I was able to examine the microfiche of the Filleigh Parish Registers - and there she was - baptized at the parish church in Filleigh in 1834. Solving one question led to another though - every previous source I'd found indicated that Charlotte Joslin was born on May 25, 1835. She was baptized on June 4, 1834!
