Chawleigh

Sometime in the late 1820's, the Call family moved from Zeal Monachorum to Chawleigh. The family lived there until at least the 1850's. Robert Call was baptized at the parish church in Chawleigh.

In 1844, a primary school was built in Chawleigh adjoining the parish church. Robert Call may have attended this school when he was a child. The school is still in use, and I'll be writing to the school master to see if the school has any record of Robert's attendance.

In 1851, John Call and Grace, his wife were living in Turnpike Cottage in Chawleigh. He was responsible for collecting tolls from people who used the road. John and Grace may have been living here when Robert was born in 1831, but we don't know that for sure. The cottage is still in use to this day.

In the above photo, Turnpike Cottage is on the left. Across the street is a small building that the turnpike gate was most likely attached to.
