Mrs. Gwen Burkhead Platt, 1981 SW Shorewood Dr., Dunnellon, FL 34431-3782 seeks a Platt connection for her husband, Harry Hall Platt. His great-grandfather was Thomas Platt, poss. (according to family tradtion) of Burlington, NJ who m. Sarah Hoyle. He worked for Baldwin Locomotive in Chester, PA. In the 1870 census they were shown living in Philadelphia and Sarah was deceased. Thomas married again and his son by Sarah, Thomas Harry Platt, did not get along, so he left, joined the merchant marine and settled in New Orleans. Thomas Harry was b. 6 July 1870 in Philadelphia. In New Orleans he m. Sarah Philpott 18 June 1890 and d. there 9 August 1943. Their son, Harry Ernest, was b. there 12 May 1893 and another son Thomas Harry, Jr., was b. there 1891 and d. unm. 1918 during flu epidemic. Harry Ernest m. 19 August 1915 to Lillie Bell Hall of Meridian, MS and d. 6 September 1980 in Jacksonville, FL. He was father of Harry Hall Platt who was b 26 April 1918 in Lake Charles, LA. There was a daughter, Birdie Nell b. 31 August 1920 in Miami, and m. W. R. Donaldson, another son named Thomas Ernest b. 8 October 1923 in Miami. Harry Hall Platt m. Gwen Burkhead --- in Las Vegas, NV and is now retired in Dunnellon, FL. [Note: There is a Thomas Platt, b. abt 1805 in Burlington Co, N.J. with no further info. Could he be father of this Thomas?]

Aliza Jane Fetterman/Fretterman, b. 27 January 1862. Their son was Adelbert Clarence Platt, 17 September 1882/88; m. Margaret Rachel, b. 18 February 1896. Their son was James Clarence Platt, b. 14 September 1916, Rutherford, Cambria co, PA; m. 23 November 1915 [a typo?] at Gallitzin, Cambria Co., PA, Pauline Marion Callahan, b. 4 June 1915, Lycoming Co., PA, dau. of Seth Callahan and Ruth Hilton. In a later communication, Richard notes that he has found in the 1850 census a Charles Platt, b. c 1818 living in Standing Stone Twp., Bradford Co,. PA. In his household were Cordelia, f. 26, Clinton m. 7, Alma f. 5, Helia (?) f. 3, Sarah f. 2/12. Is it possible that this Clinton is the Charles Clinton sought? [Note: A look at G. Richard Handrick's paper, A Platt Family of Bradford County, PA (see vol. 10, p 24) did not uncover any clue on this query. But there are two Platt families in PA in the 1963 Genealogy that Charles Platt was unable to connect with either the Richard or Thomas families. They are Clinton Charles (CC, p. 304) and Jacob D. (JD, p. 329). Both lived in the same general area of the state and both have some intriguing similarities in given names.] (see also Vol 17-1)

Abb Gunn, genealogist for Clan Gunn, has found the name Fred A. Platt, b. March 1868 in CT, in the Litchfield Co., CT census for 1900. Anyone know who he was?

Note that Peter Bissell named his first son Platt. Does anyone know the Platt connection here, if any?

Shari Bruce of Raleigh, NC has sent a note about a Book of the Month Club selection from several years ago, Life in Custer's Cavalry: Diaries and Letters of Albert and Jennie Barnitz 1867-1868, Ed. Robert M. Utley, Yale Univ. Press, New Haven, 1977. Albert Barnitz married Jennie Platt in East Cleveland, OH 11 February 1867. She was daughter of Andrew and Mary Platt and has a sister Hannah. Does anyone know the connection here? (see notes)

Kenneth R. Lucier of Bahrain, Persian Gulf, . . has sent info on George C Platt, b. 17 February 1842, Londonderry, Ireland, died 20 June 1912 and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA (just outside of Philadelphia). He enlisted in the Union Army in August 1861 and was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Gettysburg. The George C. Platt Memorial Bridge in Philadelphia is named for him. [see Vol 16, pp 29-30]. He married Elizabeth Kelly and they had 6(?) children: Emily (or Nell) (Hall) (Ken's great-grandmother); Lavinia (Bogen?); Margeret (Griffin); George, Jr; Robert; and Edward. It is said by the family that Edward was crippled as a child and was granted a special pension by the government after George, Sr. died. Ken is researching the family in Londonderry. Is anyone else aware of this family and/or have a connection?

Ken Hunsinger, 128-C Maple Ave., Hartford, CT 06114-1048, e-mail GENbuf2 @aol.com, seeks probable Platt connection of Zephaniah Platt Mitchell, who went mostly by Platt Mitchell, b. 1777 in Dutchess Co., NY area, son of William and Elizabeth Winegar Mitchell. Ken believes that he has a relationship with Zephaniah Platt, Esq. [RoM 132-1] , b. Huntington, Long Island, NY 1705, possibly as a grandson or gr. grandson. Mitchell married a Saxton/Sexton, as did Zeph, Esq. Other names found in that part of the family include Smith and Van Wyck, pre-Rev. War in the Long Island area and then at Saratoga Springs in the upstate area. For several generations the Platt name recurred in the family of Zeph. Platt Mitchell.

George Henry d. 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA. He m. May Rebecca Hughes in July 1909 in Camden, NJ. In 1880 census, Martin's name was spelled Plait. George Henry was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1900, a sailor. He may have been in US Navy for years, rank CPO, a Spanish-American War veteran and on the Great White Fleet in 1907.
