Mrs. Janet Rohrabacher, 407 W. Highland Rd., Apt. A1, Howell, MI 48843-1157, has found an Elizabeth COVEL who married a PLATT about 1818 in the Dutchess/Putnam/Columbia Co. area of NY. She would like to identify the Platt and also Elizabeth's parents.
We have received information on Platt
burials in the old "John C. Foster Family
Cemetery" on Hall Ave. in White Plains (formerly North
Castle), NY. The old stones from this cemetery were stolen during
the '70's by vandals, so the following information is from the
North Castle Historical Society:
Angeline wife of Epenetus died
6 or 1 Jan 1850, age 44 yrs. 5 mos.
Epenetus died 12 Oct 1858, age 55 yrs. 11 mos.
Epenetus Jr. son of Epenetus and Angeline, died
25 Dec. 1864, age 38 yrs.
George W. son of Epenetus and Angeline, died 25
Dec. 1852, age 18 yrs. 6 mos. 5 days.
John Henry son of Epenetus and Angeline, died 21
March 1845 age 2 yrs 10 mos. 15 days.
Mary Matilda dau. of Epenetus and Angeline, died
19 November 1848 age 19 yrs. 7 mos. 5 days.
Susan dau. of Epenetus and Angeline, died 20
July 1851 age 6 yrs. 6 mos. and 2 days (or 6 mos. and 2 days).
The name Epenetus was used often in the early
years of the Richard Platt family on this side
of the water, but less so by the 19th century, which is when this
one in White Plains was born (1802). There was an Epenetus
(Richard #131-311), b. in Huntington, NY in 1763, who
went to White Plains where he practiced medicine. He went to NYC
in 1797 to help during a yellow fever epidemic, contracted the
disease himself, and died the same year. He had a son
Epenetus (#131-311-1), b. abt. 1784, who was brought up
by an aunt in Manhasset, NY, and d. 1834 in NYC. This Epenetus
had a son, William Epenetus (#131-311-11), who
d. in 1888, but there is no one in our records who had the first
name Epenetus more recently than this.
So, is it possible that Dr. Epenetus had another
son who remained in White Plains, is not in the records, and who
then named a son Epenetus in memory of his
father? Or is there another explanation?
I found a note on my desk that says:" Stearns David Platt, b. 1834 in NY, son of David Platt, b. 1806, and Jenny Sperry. David may be son of Joseph Platt, b. CT, and Elsy." There is nothing on the note to say where I got this information, or what the documentation is, if any. It's probably something I jotted down quickly during a telephone conversation and then promptly forgot. Stearns David is undoubtedly Richard #(SD) 1 on page 359 of the 1963 Genealogy. Joseph is probably Richard #142-251 on page 95. The 1963 book says that this Joseph had three sons, but only one, Erastus, is listed. Can someone tell me where I got this information and, even more important, can it be documented? So, was David a son of Joseph? Who was the other son? - RNP
Barbara-Helene Smith, 14461 Yazoo St., San Diego, CA 92129-1639, e-mail smithrac@san.rr.com, seeks info on Mary PLATT who married Eliakim SMITH in the First Presbyterian Church, Huntington, NY, on 4 April 1742 or 1743. Mary supposedly is daughter of John " H" [Howard] Platt and died 17 March 1809. 9 children. Also, does anyone have any info on Eliakim? Eliakim's brother Zophar married Susanna SAMMIS on 5 October 1742 in Huntington, and his brother Micha married Martha Sammis on 28 November 1749, also in Huntington.
A posting on the e-mail list, IASCOTT-L in August, reprinting an article from the Davenport (IA)Daily Gazette , 3 June 1862, tells of the suicide by poisoning of Richard PLATT of Rock Island, IL, on the previous day, 2 June. He was a former resident of Davenport, was about 50 years old, and left a wife and large family. Can anyone provide a connection for this unfortunate fellow?
An obit posted on NY-OLD-NEWS-L from the Rochester (NY) Democrat & Chronicle , Thursday 9 November 1922, says that Mrs. Idessia F. PLATT , widow of George G. Platt, died 7 November 1922 at age 73. She was survived by one daughter, Mrs. C. B. ANSBERGER ; three sons, George E., of Ashtabula, OH, Darwin L., and Walter W. Platt of Rochester. Does anyone know the Platt connection of this family?
An obit appeared in late August on ILWHITES-L
taken from The Sentinel , Whiteside County, Illinois
(presumably -- the identifying part of the article had been
trimmed off).
Mary Elizabeth PLATT THOMAS died 7 May 1898 at

Four sisters and a brother survived her: Mrs. Lena K.
Baxter and Mrs. W. H. Gardner of
Morrison, Mrs. Louisa Tolbert of Elmira, New

Now, I know that there were Platts in Painted Post, Steuben Co.,
New York, but I have not been able to find a connection with this
