An obit appeared on the Steuben County Obituaries e-mail list for Harry R Platt of Wayland, NY, who died 5 Oct 1968 in North Hornell, NY at age 76. He was a native of Bath, NY, but had been a resident of Wayland for 44 years. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Platt; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Lyon of Bath, and Mrs. Katheryn Oas of Wayland; a son Richard Platt of Wayland; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Burial in Nondaga Cemetery in Bath. Does anyone know his Platt connection?
On my "Ten Most Wanted" list, #8 is as follows: "William Kendrell Platt, b. Bath, Steuben Co, NY 4 Apr 1835, d. Blakeville, Victoria, Australia 11 April 1918, son of Elias Leonard Platt and Henrietta Jane Hellem. Went to Australia on clipper Sachsusa and arrived 10 Nov 1852. Need Platt family connection." Sally Platt <platt.auck@xtra.co.nz> of New Zealand, whose husband is a descendant, has sent added information: Elias Leonard Platt's parents appear to have been Benjamin Platt, d 1858, and Phebe (_____), d 25 Aug 1847. Benjamin m. 2) Sally Ann Reader. Elias Leonard's siblings were Jacob F, Henry B, Reuben, Jane (Thomas), Jemima (Stout). Children of Elias Leonard were William, Benjamin,Charles, James, Gerrit, and Amelia. Elias Leonard is frequently listed as Leonard only. Census records indicate that the family was mulatto, which would probably explain the lack of vital record information. Can anyone provide a connection?
O.E. ("Gene") Tannery, <oetannery@mcia.com> Conroe, TX, says that he believes that his 2nd great grandfather,Zophar Tannery, was named for Dr Zophar Platt (Richard #131-2) of Huntington, NY. He points out that Dr. Zophar was a landholder and leading elder of the Old First Church of Huntington. The parents of Zophar Tannery, Thomas and Penelope (Foster), were married in this church and may have named their son after the "leading elder," who was also a pillar of the community. Mr. Tannery asks if there was any interest or connection between Thomas and Penelope Tannery and Dr Zophar Platt? Is there any record of who Zophar's widowed mother remarried? Do any of Dr. Zophar's descendants have any records of such?
Donna Perry of Warren, OH has sent two obits: Elizabeth S Platt, wife of William M, died 29 Jul 1830 in Middlebury, Portage Co, OH. She was daughter of the Rev Mr Miles of Chatham, CT. And: William M Platt, died 5 Oct 1830 in Middlebury, Portage Co, OH; 24 years, Merchant. Does anyone know who this couple was and their Connection? Note: Chatham was the old name for East Hampton, CT. (Curious fact: Hampton and East Hampton are not near each other, and Hampton is well to the east of East Hampton.) (see notes)
Linda Platt (Mrs William E) of Cynthiana, KY has sent me her husband's line back to Justus Platt, b New Haven, CT March 183(1?). He m in 1859 Mary Paddock of WI in Floyd Co, IA 4 sons: Justis, m Eliza Barnett; other sons names not given. Justus then moved to Mitchell Co, KS, may have remarried and had 4 more sons. The youngest of these was Louis who m Cora Barnett, sister of Eliza. There is much more, but can anyone provide a connection from the above?
Kathy Winters <kwinters@childcarechoices.org> has a great grandfather,William P Platt, b 15 Oct 1831 in North Jackson, OH, d 6 Apr 1910 in Lordstown, OH. Fletcher Bishop <flebis@worldnet.att.net> has found a Vermont Chronicle article dated June 27, 1834 noting the marriage of Mr. Jehu Platt to Miss Sarah Sackrider at Swanton Falls. His contacts can find no Sackrider families in VT census CD's for any years. He did find a Jehu Platt and a Daniel Platt in Rutland for 1790. A Sarah Platt with family is in Milton in Chittenden in 1840 and 1850. There is no Jehu or older male with her for either census. There is a Daniel. He asks if someone has access to index CD's or paper index books for 1800, 1810, 1820, and 1830, it would be helpful to locate any references to Jehu Platt for those years. He can use the location and page numbers to scan census reels available at his library. ----Note: We have been having a hard time sorting out the Platts in Vermont. There were at least two Jehus, possibly one or two more. One seems to be son of James Platt, who was b 1790, of Clarendon, VT. Another Jehu, b 1764(?) in Ridgefield, CT, m Dolly (____). There may have been another Jehu, b 1777, also in Ridgefield.
Timothy Cooper Mooney of Savannah, GA, <TCMooney@aol.com> is looking for the Platt connection of Carrie Louise Platt, b 28 Jul 1867, Ridgefield, CT who m Rufus Thatcher Cooper, b 15 Feb 1858 in East Weymouth, MA. Marriage date and place not known. Rufus became a Methodist minister in NY State, CT, and MA.---Note: There was a Chauncey L Platt of Norwalk, CT, b, say, betw 1845 and 1850, who had a dau, Carrie L , but no further information. This family appeared to have lived in Norwalk, not Ridgefield, but this is the closest possibility we can find.
William Coffman <willcoff@hotmail.com> has asked if any of us knows a military colleague of his, Jack Platt, who served as an officer in the Marine Corps in the 60's in Washington, and probably later overseas. He sustained a slight hand injury and was born roughly 1936-1939.
Mrs. Lorraine McCarthy, Tucson, AZ, has an Eli Platt (1814-1889) who married Eliza Wood (1819-1889). Their son was Albert Platt (1843-1898), a Civil War veteran. Albert had a daughter Nettie (1895-1984). This family was in Dartmouth, MA and moved to Morrow, OH, and eventually to Michigan. Can anyone provide a connection?. (see Vol 18-3 )
Maxine E Pence, Spokane, WA, asks if anyone has found out which Catherine Fonda married George W Platt, s/o Nathaniel and Phebe (Smith). Is anyone researching the Platt family who went to Michigan? (see Vol 20-1)
