The
following note appeared 5/14/02 on NYOTSEGO-L[@rootsweb.com],
Marriage/Death Notices from The Oneonta Herald 1856:
10/22/1856 MARRIED
At the residence of Stephen PLATT, Oct. 14th, by
Rev. W. G. Queal, Mr. Francis M FOX, to Miss Martha
M. PLATT, both of Maryland.
We knew that there were Platts in Maryland, Otsego Co., New York,
but couldn't find a record of these Platts or this marriage. We
posted the query on Platt-L (an e-mail list) and Shari Bruce
replied that Martha was one of the "7 other"
unidentified children of Stephen 7 Platt (Richard
#142-242-1) and Nancy Burnside, on p.
114 of the 1963 Richard Platt Genealogy. But we still don't know
who the other 6 are! Can anyone help?
A subsequent posting to the same list (NYOTSEGO-L) says:
11/2/1859 MARRIED
In Oneonta, on October 27th, by Rev. J. Smith, Jr., Mr. James
Brown, to Miss Eliza PLATT, both of
Milford.
Does anyone know if Eliza was another of the "7
others"?
And then, still another posting to NYOTSEGO-L a few days later :
Buried Riverside Cemetery, Section 1, lot 180
Houghtaling, Charles; st/wife Sarah Jane; 1849
Aug 1 - 1914 May 25
Houghtaling, Sarah Jane PLATT; stone/hus Charles
1857 May 29-1944 Sep 1
Houghtaling, Austen, s/o Charles & Sarah
Jane (can't read date) 1851- 9 yr
Now, is Sarah Jane still another of this family? If so, she would
be considerably younger than her sisters.
Mike Elliott, P.O. Box 35, Fort Covington, NY 12937, e-mail Bigus7@aol.com, seeks parents, Platt connection, of John PLATT, b. 1854 in Montpelier, VT, mar. Cynthia STARKEY on 16 February 1881 in Clare, MI. John was living in Vernon Twp. at the time and was age 27, occupation: farmer. Cynthia also was living in Vernon Twp. and was age 23. She was born in Walsingham, Ontario, Canada and was a full-blooded Chippewa. Their daughter, Sara Mae Platt married William Avery Elliott. There were also two uncles, Roy and Ace/Acea Platt, living in upper MI, that may have also been children of John Platt.
Query made and
answered (somewhat):
Richard B. Platt of Grosse Point Farms, MI, says that there are
hand-painted murals in the dining room of the Country Club of
Detroit, done by a Joseph and June Platt. They
were probably done in the late 1920's of after.
On p. 340 of the 1963 Richard Genealogy, there is a
Joseph B. Platt (JM) 113, b. 26 March 1895, who married June
Evans on 22 October 1919. He's described as an
"Artist Designer" and living in New York City and
Little Compton, RI. This would appear to be the Joseph and June
who painted the murals. Does anyone know anything about this
couple? From the description of the murals, which cover the
history of Detroit, and the time period, it sounds like they
could have been a WPA project. (see notes)
