An obit was posted on IDPAYETTE-L (RootsWeb) for William H. Platt, a pioneer resident of Payette County, ID, who died there on 3 April 1937. He had resided in the area since 1885, when it was named Canyon Co. He served as County Commissioner for Canyon Co. for many years and later, when Payette County was formed, as a County Commissioner in that county. He was survived by his wife, Mary E. Platt, and two daughters, Mrs. F. C. Marguardson of Buhl, ID., and Cora Platt of Payette; one grandson, Ernest F. Marguardson of Oakland, CA; one sister, Mrs. Mary Chase of Payette and one brother, Howard V. Platt of Hollywood, CA
A little later, three obits were posted to IDPAYETT-L. They were for Mrs. D. C. CHASE (Mary Ann Platt) who died 9 June 1944 at age 86 in Payette, ID; Mrs. Mary PLATT, widow of William Henry Platt, who died 25 April 1939 at age 81 in Payette; and Miss Cora Juanita Platt, daughter of Mary and William Henry Platt, who died 20 January 1948 at age 68 in Ontario, ID. From these obits we are able to reconstruct this family, partially, as follows:.
Samuel and Susan Platt lived on a farm near Lynn, Indiana, and had eleven children, of whom only William Henry,Mary Ann, and Howard V. are named. Mary Ann was next oldest to William Henry, and was born 19 April 1858. Her early years were spent in Indiana, but in the fall of 1876 she went west and married on 30 September of that year David C. Chase. They lived first in the “small rugged railroad town” of Silverbow, Montana, not far from Butte. They later lived in Come and Rock Creek, Wyoming, Ogden, Utah, and Pocatello, Idaho, where David worked as a telegraph dispatcher for the railroad. In 1885 they moved to Boomerang, now Payette, Idaho, which became their permanent home. Mary Ann died 9 June 1944 in Payette, survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Moore of Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton, California, and a son, D. Carl Chase of Payette; a brother, Howard V. Platt of Los Angeles, California; four nieces and nephews among whom are Mrs. F. C. Marguardsen of Buhl, Idaho, Cora J. Platt of Payette, Mrs. Louis Granger of Los Angeles and Mrs. Thomas White of Rochester, New York; two granddaughters, Mrs. H. V.Gates and Mrs. V. S. Mathews.
Mary Ann’s older brother, William Henry Platt, died 3 April 1937 in Payette. He married 6 July 1872 in Lynn Indiana, Mary [_____], who was born 28 July 1851 in Richmond, Indiana. In 1885 they moved from Ogden, Utah to Payette where William Henry was employed by the railroad. Mary died 25 April 1939 in Payette, survived by her daughter Cora Juanita Platt of Payette, and Emma J.Marguardson of Buhl, Idaho; and a nephew, Ernest F. Marguardson of Oakland, California.
Cora Juanita Platt died 20 January 1948 in Ontario, Idaho, at age 68. She was born 5 October 1879 in Central City, Nebraska and came with her parents to Payette in 1886 where she made her home. She was survived by her sister, Mrs. Emma Marguardsen, and nephew, Ernest Marguardsen.
All three of these obits are from the Independent Enterprise of Payette, Idaho. Mary Platt’s obit is dated 27 April 1939; Mary Ann Platt Chase’s, 15 June 1944; and Cora Juanita Platt’s, 22 January 1948.
We can further reconstruct this family as follows: Samuel Platt and Susan [_____] had eleven children, of whom we can name: William Henry Platt, Mary Ann Platt, and Howard V. Platt. William Henry married Mary [_____] and had two daughters, Cora Juanita (unmarried) and Emma J., who married F. C. Marguardsen and had a son Ernest F. Mary Ann married David C. Chase and had a daughter [_____] who married J. H. Moore, and a son, D. Carl Chase. Mary Ann’s nieces Mrs. Louis Granger and Mrs. Thomas White, and granddaughters Mrs. H. V. Gates and Mrs. V. S. Mathews, cannot be placed accurately.
Now, can anyone place this Platt family?

A posting on SIBLEY-L by Crowder563(-at-)aol.com says that his/her great grandmother was Frances SIBLEYwho was married to Frank H. PLATT. She apparently split with her family, possibly over the marriage. Their daughter, Jennie Platt, was born 26 July 1880. Crowder563 says that his/her grandmother never met her biological father and Frances (Fannie) Sibley did not talk about him. Frances apparently was daughter of Alexander Sibley. Does anyone know who this Frank H. Platt was?

Platt Field at Camp Sequassen, owned by the Connecticut Yankee Council, Boy Scouts of America, was given by Mettie B. PLATT. We have found her, apparently, in the New Haven, CT, City Directory for 1905, living on 1194 Chapel Street, and listed as widow of John H. Platt. According to the 1900 census, Mettie was born April 1862, John abt. 1844, and they were married abt. 1883. We may find them with a little more digging, but, just in case, does anyone know who these people were? Camp Sequassen sits astride the Torrington/New Hartford town line in northwestern Connecticut. Also, there is a Platt Hill State Park in nearby Winchester.

Donald J. Platt of Frankston, TX, writes that a painting by George W. PLATT (1839-1899) was recently sold to a private collector for several thousand dollars. The painting is entitled, “A Handful of Flowers,” and dated 1879. George W. Platt is noted for his trompel’oeil still lifes. The only biographical information we have been able to collect on him is his dates, and we have been unable to make a connection. Can anyone provide it?

Don Platt also writes that there is a David PLATT who is producer of the TV show, Law and Order. Does anyone know who he is?

Nancy Wagner, email NLW1004(-at-)aol.com,seeks information on her great great grandfather, William Griffen PLATT,who, she thinks, was in the Civil War and possibly was killed in the War. He may have served in the War with a William FULLER, who was found in the 1900 census in Texas living with William Griffen Platt’s son. William Griffen Platt may have come from the Shreveport, Louisiana, area.

Lyn Beadle, email MBeadle104(-at-)aol.com, is looking for the ancestry of Hubbell MIDDLEBROOK and Julia PLATT, who married at Redding, Fairfield County,CT, 5 October 1835. There is no birth record for either of them in our statewide index to Barbour. The 1840 census for Redding shows the family with 1 male under five...1 male 20-30...1 male 50-60...1 female under five...1 female 10-15...1 female 20-30. The 1850 census for Sharon, Washtenaw County, MI shows Hubbal Middlebrook age 39; Juliaage 35; Augustus age 14; Sarah Jane age 10; John age 9; Edward age 5; Frances H. age 1 - all born in Connecticut. The gravestone inscription at the Sharon Town Hall cemetery at Manchester, Washtenaw County, MI shows Hubbill M.Middlebrook b. 12 Oct 1816, d. 2 Mar. 1888; Julia M. (Platt) Middlebrook b. 18June 1811, d. 12 Aug. 1881 - possibly these dates are reversed, since according to the 1850 census, Hubbell was born in 1811 and Julia in 1816. The Middlebrooks genealogy shows Hubbell Middlebrooks, son of Sylvanus and Jerusha (Hubbell) Middlebrooks, born 12 November 1774 (Fairfield/Greenfield),and says that he married _____Platt, had son Augustus and moved to Michigan. This record is obviously confused, since Hubbell’s birth is a generation too soon for this couple, but the first child of this marriage was Augustus. Julia is not found in the Platt Genealogy, 1963. Can anyone identify this couple?

Joe Northrop of Huntington, IN, in correspondence with us on the Northrop family, mentioned that there was a State Police detective there in Huntington named Sam PLATT who later became a collector for the Indiana Dept. of Revenue. Also, there is a Steve PLATT who is the basketball coach at Huntington College. In the 1970s he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated because he was the country’s college basketball high scorer while at Huntington College. Does anyone know who these Platts are?

A posting recently appeared on HOVEY-L about a Betsey Scribner HOVEY, b. 1812 in Niagara Falls, NY, daughter of Ebenezer Hovey, who married Brewster PLATT. Their daughter, Mary Platt, b. 1842, married William GRAHAM after the Civil War. Her brother, Hiram Hovey Platt, was killed in the War at age 24. Can anyone identify this Platt family?

Recently seen on eBay: a cabinet photo labeled “Lady in Hat.” On the back in pencil is written “Etta M. Platt 1907” and the photographer was G. I. North,So. Norwalk, Ct. Can anyone identify this woman?

Also on eBay: a small painting,“Portrait of a Girl” oil on canvas. It is signed and dated on the back, “J. C.Platt 1852.” ArtPrice lists him as a Boston, MA, artist, James C. Platt, died 1892. Can anyone place him?

Janean Ray, [of] Akron, OH, email JRay38(-at-)neo.rr.com, is trying to find David PLATT who m. Suty(?). Son is William Platt, b. 1828 Saratoga, NY, d. 1880 Mason Co. WV, m. Metilda ESTEP, b. 1847, Kanawha Co., WV. Son is James Henry Platt, b. 1868 Mason Co., WV.
