Answers and Research Notes
(Vol 15, p 25 Sep/Dec97) Query Answered: Ezekiah Platt (1802-1875) of Bloomington, IL (see vol. 14, p. 15) has been found, and the answer was right here all the time!: He is Hezekiah Platt, #121-3, p. 137, in the Thomas of Burlington book. so, those of you with copies of the 1963 Richard Platt book can make a note on p. 311 that the line identified as (EZ) is that of the Thomas of Burlington family, and put an "H" in front of the name of the elusive Ezekiah!
(Vol 16, p 11 Mar 98) Query Answered: Richard Harvey of New Castle, PA e-mail rharvey @ccia.com, has found the will of Andrew 7 Platt and "Mary Jane Barnitz commonly known as Jennie P. Barnitz wife of Albert Barnitz" is named as his daughter. Andrew is a son of Ebenezer 6 Platt (RoM #121-621) on whose family Richard Harvey and Diana Harvey Latkiewicz have done much work. (See Vol 15-3 )
(Vol 16, p 31 Dec 98) Query Answered: A few newsletters back we asked if anyone knew the Platt connection of Mizell ("Whitey") Platt who played baseball for the St. Louis Browns back in the 1940's. Pat (Patrick) Platt of Nokomis, FL reports that he recently found a 1949 Bowman baseball card of George Mizell Platt. He was son of Francis M. Platt and Annie Mizell. Francis M. was brother of Pat's great grandfather Joshua Aaron Platt, and son of John Platt, who was b. 1793 in Duplin Co., or Brunswick Co., NC and d. Arcadia, FL and bur. Pinelevel Cem., 1874. John's father was Joshua Platt, b. abt 1770 in Duplin or Brunswick Co., d. abt 1855 in Dade City, FL, mar. Amy Newell abt 1790. Joshua's father was Adam Platt, b. abt 1745, d. 18 August 1820. We have not yet been able to connect this family with any other. Our baseball encyclopedia says that Whitey Platt was b. 21 August 1920 in West Palm Beach, FL. He played 5 years in the majors: Chicago Cubs 1942 and '43, Chicago White Sox 1946, and St. Louis Browns 1948 and '49. He was an outfielder and his lifetime batting average was .255. I remember once, in my younger days, seeing him play in Yankee Stadium. See also Vol 15-3 .
(Vol 20, p 15 Jun 2002) Dick Platt's Most Wanted #17. According to the 1963 Richard Platt Genealogy, Phebe Platt, daughter of Epenetus 3 (#131), b 31 August 1710 in Huntington, NY, and died 18 January 1738/9, married 25 August 1727 Benjamin Tredwell of Hampstead, NY. Others claim that this Phebe married Samuel Bayless,(see Vol 16-1) b. 1706, d. 1779, and died 4 October 1755. It appears that there were two Phebe Platts who were contemporaneous. Both marriages are documented, so the question is, which one was daughter of Epenetus 3, and where does the other one fit in? (see also Vol 15-3 . )
(Vol 20, p 5 Mar 2002): Kathy Winters (see Vol 19-3) reports her connection has been found by Donna Perry (also Vol 19-3 ). Both these ladies descend from Joseph 5 Platt (Richard #142-25); Donna through son Joseph 6 and Kathy through son Eli 6.
(Vol 20 p14 June 2002) We had wondered about the Platt connection of the actress Louise Platt, Vol 20-1, who is most famous for her part in the classic western Stagecoach. the answer came from one of our Board members, Carlton Platt of North Branford, CT. Louise is daughter of Daniel Philip 10 Platt, (Richard #121-322-331-1, p. 164 in the 1963 Richard book). Carlton knew her brother Francis Chedsey Platt, who lived in Guilford, CT. Members of his family still live there.
Sandra Dawson's query regarding Veda Mae Platt, Vol 18-3: Veda's father Charles Newton Platt [ToB #111-453, p233] is son of James T Platt and Mary Ann Phillips. Charles married Lottie M. Bowman abt 1891. Charles died 28 Sep 1921 and is buried at Geneva, Fillmore Co, NE. Information from Shari Bruce and Lorie Norton research and from Maxine Larson (descendant of Charles' brother Minor W Platt [ToB #111-451]. Charles did have a brother James E Platt [ToB #111-452], the "Jim Platt" in Sandra's photograph..
(Vol 20, Sep 2002): Richard B. Platt of Grosse
Point Farms, MI, says that there are hand-painted murals in the
dining room of the Country Club of Detroit, done by a
Joseph and June PLATT . They were probably done in the
late 1920's or after. p. 340 of the 1963 Richard Genealogy ,
there is a Joseph B. Platt (JM)113, b. 26 March
1895, who married June Evans on 22 October 1919.
He's described as an "Artist Designer" and living in
New York City and Little Compton, RI. This would appear to be the
Joseph and June who painted the murals. Does anyone know anything
about this couple? From the description of the murals, which
cover the history of Detroit, and the time period, it sounds like
they could have been a WPA project.
An answer to the above query:
We received a telephone call from a Mitchell Owens who is
researching Joseph and June Platt who
painted the murals at the Country Club of Detroit (see above and Vol 20-2). He said that Joseph was
an editor for House & Garden and did the set design
for Gone With the Wind . June was also a cook book
writer. A subsequent e-mail from Richard B. Platt of Grosse
Pointe Farms, MI, tells even more about her. He has obtained a
copy of her 1958 cook book, and the flyleaf says, "June
Platt (Mrs. Joseph B. Platt) was born in Springfield,
Illinois, and educated in twenty-six schools in England, France,
and the United States. Mrs. Platt, who lives in New York City, is
the mother of two sons. She attended cooking school and art
school, beginning her career as a professional artist. In the
early thirties she began writing monthly food articles for House
and Garden, and since 1942 has been writing intermittently,
devoting her major efforts to her full-time occupation as a
designer of wallpaper, rugs, and other home decorations. Mrs.
Platt's books includee June Platt's Party Cook Book, June
Platt's Plain and Fancy Cook Book, June Platt's Dessert
Cook Book, Serve It and Sing, The Best I Ever
Ate , the last co-authored with Sophie Kerr."
(Vol 20, Sep 2002): Two queries answered, leading
to another
#13 in my "Ten Most Wanted" list says, "Francis
Henry Platt , according to the 1963 Richard Platt
Genealogy (#FH-1), was b. Redding, CT, 1846. He. d. Thomaston, CT
1915. His 'mother was a Treadwell,' and 'he
quite probably traces to Richard.' Does anyone know his parents?
"
Shari Bruce has sent a census entry for 1850 which says:
1850 CT, Fairfield Co, p. 192B, town of Redding, 15 Aug, line 1,
#158/161
Henry J Platt, 43, m, combmaker, b. Redding, CT
Sarah " , 33, f, b Easton, CT
Oliver B " , 9, m, b Easton, CT, in school
Henrietta " , 8, f, b Redding, CT, in
school
Charles N " , 6, m, b Redding, CT, in
school
Francis H ", 3, m. b Redding, CT
On the previous page, #156/159 is a
Thomas Treadwell, 60, farmer, all born Weston,
CT
Esther B " , 62
Eli " , 32, Farmer
Joseph ", 28, Miller
It is possible that Thomas could be Sarah
Platt's father if she is indeed a Treadwell as
reported.
In addition, it appears that Francis' sister
Henrietta may be the one sought by Wendy Wolff, e-mail
wewolff@skadden.com, whose Henrietta Platt, b.
Redding, CT 1843, mar. 24 March 1867 Samuel Dean,
b. 1835. (See Vol 19-1)
Now, does someone have a connection for this Henry J.
Platt, b. abt. 1807 in Redding?
(Vol 20, p 30; Dec 02) Old Query Answered: (See Vol 16-3) Query of James S Kasch concerning Allen Cornelius and Maria Platt. Shari Bruce's research on Abraham Platt [ToB #123] shows his will, proved in Wayne Co, IN, names daughter Maria Cornelius and her son Abraham Cornelius.
