72. Zebulon Brown 7,9,10,11,12,13 was born on 30 Jun 1781 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut,1,14,15,16 died on 8 Feb 1875 in Columbus, Chenango County, New York, at age 93,17,18 and was buried in Brookfield Rural Cemetery, Brookfield, New York.3
General Notes: Zebulon's father died when he was about four years old. On October 17, 1796, James York, son of Bell York, was appointed guardian to Zebulon and Eunice Brown in Stonington. Zebulon probably came to Brookfield, New York with his mother and step father, Asa Frink, probably about 1796.
In 1806, Madison County was formed from Chenango and Brookfield became a township in Madison County. This area was a part of twenty townships created in 1788 when purchased from the Oneida Indians as part of the Town of Whitestown, Montgomery County. Many settlers came to the Brookfield area from Connecticut and Rhode Island on the first highways. They came in Conestoga Wagons and built log cabins until sawmills could be erected and frame dwellings constructed. Brookfield Village was first called Bailleys Corners.
Zebulon's ancestors had been active in the Baptist Church at North Stonington, Connecticut, his great grandfather having been a Deacon. The new settlers founded the first Baptist Church in Brookfield (then Clarksville) in 1798. In the early settlement of the town of Brookfield, many Seventh-Day Baptists came from Rhode Island, Connecticut and Petersburg, Rensselaer County, New York, and in July, 1797, met and appointed a committee to draft articles of faith and covenant. In compliance with previous arrangements, there met near Leonardsville, in October of 1797, ministers, deacons and brethren from the Church of Hopkinton, Rhode Island, and Petersburg, New York, and after full examination and consultation, they organized into a church in fellowship in the denomination, under the name of the First Sabbatarian Baptist Church of Christ in Brookfield. This was The First Seventh-Day Baptist Church of Brookfield.
Madison County, New York was formed in 1806 from Chenango County and Brookfield became a township in Madison County. In 1807, Zebulon cleared off a l/2 acre site near Brookfield Village which is no doubt where he and Sarah raised nine children. They lived in the area of Gorton Lake on one of the earliest remembered farms. When examining the deeds of Madison County, it was found that in 1830 a Zebulon Brown purchased land in lot 47 in the town of Brookfield. In a deed recorded in 1831, Zebulon and his wife "Sally" sold thirty-three acres on Beaver Creek, being a part of lot 57 in the 19th township which was Brookfield. It is not known whether this is the same Zebulon since there were two Zebulon Browns in Brookfield at that time. However, on the 21st day of March in 1854, Zebulon and his wife, Sarah, sold seventy-one acres of lot 47 in the 19th township. This appears to be our Zebulon and the same who purchased the land in 1830.
In 1850, Zebulon and Sarah were living in Brookfield and two children remained at home; John, who was twenty-one, and Eunice who was sixteen. They lived on the same property as their son, Alonzo. Zebulon was 68 and Sarah was 58. In 1865 the family was still together, and listed in Columbus, Chenango County.
Research Notes: THE TOWN (TOWNSHIP) OF BROOKFIELD
In 1784 the federal government acquired a section of land from the Iroquois nation west of the Unadilla River known today as the town of Brookfield. In 1791 Stephen Hoxie and a young companion traveled from Rhode Island as agents for would-be-settlers to purchase land in this newly opened territory. In Albany, Hoxie bought 13 lots in Brookfield, sight unseen. He would soon discover the beauty, wealth of resources, and viability of his investment.
Concurrently, Captain Daniel Brown and his family were journeying westward to homestead on this land. These two men were not only among the first settlers, but were soon to become the first entrepreneurs in Brookfield.
Brookfield possessed abundant natural resources. Two of its greatest assets were the rolling hills covered with numerous varieties of timber and several strong and swift waterways Iying in the valleys in between. The Unadillal River forms Brookfield's eastern border. Beaver Creek (so named for a large dam built by the industrious creatures of the same name) almost bisects the town from north to south. Mill Creek runs between these two over numerous falls and a branch of the Chenango River cuts across the northwest corner of the town.
It was on Mill Creek in 1792 that Brown built the first sawmill. Another early settler, John Button, built the first gristmill a short distance away near a 70-foot waterfall on the creek which was thereafter known as Button's Falls.
These developments began a period of rapid settlement in the area. The pioneers for whom Hoxie bought parcels of land journeyed to Brookfield to claim their land and establish farms. However, at this time three wealthy Eastern speculators, Michael Myers, Jedidiah Sanger, and John I. Morgan bought up a great deal of the unsold government lands in Brookfield and Sangerfield. Some of this land was subsequently sold to settlers, but the largest portions were merely leased to area emigrants. For nearly a century, this land was controlled and leased by these men and their descendants greatly impeding progress and improvements in the town. Many of the earliest settlers moved on not wishing to continually farm and pay rent to landlords to seek lands of their own to purchase or homestead. It was not until the descendants of some of these men began to sell their shares in the property that Brookfield increased in the number of small, individual landholders. Even today, however, a large portion of the southwest quarter of the town is state-owned property, repurchased for its forestry and other natural resources.
In spite of this limitation on the amount of land open to purchase by the early settlers, those who were able to buy land tended to build their homesteads and watermills along the waterways. Most of the communities in Brookfield were established around such mills. Mill Creek and Beaver Creek were seen as ideal for such enterprises and many saw- and gristmills sprang up along their banks. The village of Brookfield (previously Clarkville) was one of the earliest settlements on Beaver Creek. A gristmill on the Unadilla River was the beginning of the settlement of Leonardsville so named for Reuben Leonard, a wealthy entrepreneur and the first storeowner in the area. To the north of Leonardsville, the village of Unadilla Forks also had a mill as its focus.
Severe flooding, often due to the spring thaws, was all too common along these waterways and several of the early mills were destroyed. Some owners simply rebuilt, others relocated to what they thought were safer locations. As the milling settlements grew, other small scale manufactories and businesses opened, such as tanneries, potasheries, wagon shops, and farm equipment suppliers. All of these were mainly for trade within the town and few of these business ventures grew much beyond their clientele.
The villages of North and South Brookfield were settled a bit later, the former on a tributary of the Chenango River in the northwest corner of the town and the latter on Beaver Creek. Both sites were ideal for the popular and potentially prosperous sawmills and gristmills which were quickly established. The area around North Brookfield also proved to be well suited to the growing of hops. Another successful business in North Brookfield was the wagon factory of Gorton and Fitch.
Until the Civil War, lumbering small crop farming, and dairy herding were the most common activities of the area's settlers. The farmers tended not to specialize, leaving the main industry of milling to the local merchants and entrepreneurs. Specialization in farming began in the 1860s as pasture land was gradually cleared and could support larger dairy herds. One of these early dairy farmers established a cheese factory on his land to process the enormous quantities of milk his herds produced. His example was soon followed by other dairy farmers and as the manufacture of cheese grew, so did the demand for milk and these mutually reinforcing endeavors made dairy farming a profitable venture.
Cheese factories opened in Brookfield, Leonardsville, Unadilla Forks, West Edmeston, and North Brookfield in rapid succession. One of the more elaborate factories was a chain of processing plants in Unadilla Forks opened in 1863, powered by steam engines, and owned by E. D. Lamb.
Two other points of interest set Brookfield apart from the other towns in Madison county. Sources vary slightly, but it is generally accepted that the first county fair was held in Brookfield in 1839, sponsored by the Madison County Agricultural Society. For several years the fair traveled the county, setting up at a different site every year. It finally settled in Brookfield as its permanent home after the northern parts of the county expressed little interest in hosting the fair. It has been on its present site in the village of Brookfield for nearly a century, having grown from an initial three acres rented from a local farmer to its present 38 acres including numerous permanent exhibit halls and a racetrack.
The fair's exhibitors have come from all parts of the county and even include a few traveling exhibits from other parts of the state. Most activities and competitions reflect the county's wide range of livelihoods and interests including livestock competitions, handcrafts, garden produce, baking, farm implements, 4-H activities, and horse show. Of course it would not he a fair without central amusement park rides, games and food stalls. The county fair has had cycles of both attendance and participation, but still thrives and is supported by both county and out-of-county enthusiasts.

Death Notes: Horace lived only four years following the death of his wife, Esther. Following his death, all of his children, except Freeman and Lewis, migrated to the Northwest and took up residance in Oregon and Washington.
General Notes: Horace grew up in Brookfield, Madison County, New York where he lived near Gorton Hill with his parents, four brothers and four sisters. Research of this family proved education was of prime concern and several members of the family became teachers. They all remained in Brookfield and descendants remain there today. His two younger sisters married men who were members of the Society of Friends in nearby Poolville. They were cheese makers and farmers in that area.
It is said that following the death of his first wife, Horace spent time traveling in New York State before returning to Madison County. There were four children at home, however, and he soon returned to Brookfield. He went to Chenango County where he met Esther Crandall. Following their marriage they lived in Columbus Township.
Columbus Township was formed in 1805 from Brookfield which became Madison County in 1806. Chenango means "pleasant river flowing through the land of the bull thistle", a plant which has become the county symbol. The Chenango River by sects the county and the Unadilla River, on the far Eastern border, flows into the Susquehanna at the county's Southeast corner.
In 1852, he purchased one and a half acres on both sides of the Plank Road from Hascull Ransford. The land was part of a parcel of land once owned by Ichabod Brown and was located near Columbus Village in Chenango County. The old Plank Road is now known as Route 8 and was built around 1851. It ran from Leonardsville to New Berlin and was made of Hemlock plank, eight feet long and three inches thick. No record of Horace selling this land has been found to date. He lived there about two years and in 1855 he took his wife and seven children to Iowa. He was forty-one years old and the ages of his children ranged from twenty to two years old. The children grew up in and around the village of Prairieburg where most of them met and married their spouses.
In Iowa by 1855, Horace mortgaged a small piece of land in Section 17 which he later purchased. He appeared on the 1856 Iowa State Census in Buffalo Township. There were a total of 529 people on the Buffalo Township Census. Horace and his wife Esther also owned a farm in Section 23 in Boulder Township which they sold to James Crusenberry in 1872. Then, in 1857, Horace obtained a United States Land Grant (Certificate # 24724) which contained three hundred and twenty acres in Section 22. Horace remained on this land until he sold his farm and opened a general store called, H.B. Brown & Son, located on Section 29, near Hills Mills which he operated with his son, Perry. They had a thriving business selling a full line of goods associated with a country store. Horace and his wife Esther also owned a farm in Section 23 in Boulder Township which they sold to James Crusenberry in 1872. (See notes for Horace's son, Alvin, for detail regarding grasshoppers in Iowa and farm life.)
In the 1880 Iowa census he was living with his son Perry and his family.
Research Notes: BOULDER TOWNSHIP, LINN COUNTY, IOWA.......as described in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Linn County Iowa, published by the Chapman Brothers in 1887.
"In the extreme northeastern part of Linn County is the township of Boulder. It is an excellent agricultrual district. The surface of the township is generally rolling and beautifully timbered. From the eminence of some knolls a grand and magnificent view meets the eye from every quarter. For miles either way during the growing season, the eye beholds verdant fields, dotted over with fine farm residences, schoolhouses, etc. Before the hand of man had subdued these lands; and when the prairies and woodlands were in their virgin state, the scenery from these eminences must have been extrenekt charming. With its green flowery carpet, its undulating surface, skirted by beautiful and rereshing groves that more definitely mark the boundries, it must have presented to the eye of the lone traveler or new settler a scene most beautiful and sublimely grand.
Through the southwestern portion flows Buffalo Creek by which, and some little tributaries, the township is watered and drained; along the water courses there is considerable timber. In 1851 Wiliam Wagner came in and made a settlement. He was soon followed by Silas Edginton and William McQueen. Later on came William Ward, B. Harrison, H. B. Brown, Frank Cooley, J. Q. Wilds, J. Barnhardt and John Wagner. Soon after the settlement was formed a school was opened. It was located about one mile northeast of the present site of Prairieburg. The township has become pretty well cultivated and contains some excellent farms and dwellings. Its postoffice is at Prairieburg, where the people do their trading. The population on the town list is about 1,000 - three-fourths of which are Americans.
PRAIRIEBURG.........There is in Boulder Township a very pretty and well-located village, though not very large, it is American. One of the principal objects in establishing the town at Prairieburg was to have a market place on the north side of the creek.......In 1867 the town was platted, and took in part of sections 21, 27 and 28".

General Notes: Alvin went to Oregon on a wagon train from St. Joseph, Missouri in 1854. He told of being at Cripple Creek, Cottage Grove and in California. In 1860, he was shown living with his Uncle Alonzo in Brookfield, New York, however, he went to Iowa soon after. He served in Co. C of the 44th Iowa Infantry in the Civil War. He was discharged September 15, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa.
Following the War he returned to Columbus, New York where he married and had one child before returning to Iowa. In Iowa, he purchased property in Linn County in 1868 which he sold in 1870. He entered a homestead claim near Ashton, Iowa about 1871. (Ashton was then called St. Gilmore). He moved to Cottage Grove, Oregon in 1877 and to Newankum, Washington Territory in 1878 prior to Washington Statehood.
In Newaukum he raised his family and encountered many hardships farming. He probably was the first of the Brown family to relocate to the Northwest and appears on the First Census of the State of Washington in 1889.
Newaukum (Section 8, Twp. 13N, Range 2 West) is a community three miles south of Chehalis in west central Lewis County. The Puget's Sound Agricultural Company, a Hudson's Bay Company subsidiary, maintained a farm there in pioneer days. It was named by Northern Pacific Railway Company officials for Newaukum River. Newaukum Places in King and Lewis County hear the name Newaukum. The word is Indian in origin and means "gently flowing water."
Newaukum (Section 36, Twp. 21N, Range 5 East) is also a small community on Muckleshoot Prairie in King County.
Research Notes: (The following is transcribed from a letter written by Alvin Brown to his cousin, name not known, who lived in Brookfield, NY in 1890. Notes in italics are by his granddaughter Margaret Linch Morris.)
March 4th, 1890 Newaukum, Wash.
Dear Cousin:
I received your letter about two weeks ago. We had sickness in the family at the time - had just buried our baby - aged 3 years and 4 months, who died Feb. 4th with that terrible disease diphtheria after being sick about ten days. The two other children, Clarence aged 8 and Eunice 6, were sick both with a milder form of the disease and are now out of danger and about well. The membrane grew down into the baby’s windpipe and caused death by suffocation. As a last resort we had the operation of tracheotomy performed on her, but it was of no avail. She lived a little over two days after the operation was performed when her brief existence in this world was closed forever. I trust that our loss is her infinite gain and am glad that her heart will never ache as our hearts have ached and that never more on her will sorrow fall or pain. And I humbly hope that sometime in the great hereafter in the language of the past, where free from all sorrow and pain, in the songs of lips and harps in our hands we shall meet one another again.
There are only our two younger children at home with us now. Sarah is at work in a hotel here at Newaukum and Blanche is at work in a hotel at Castle Rock, about thirty miles South of here on the railroad. She has been at home only once in over a year. She wrote she was coming home shortly to make us a visit. My sisters, Lois and Kate, were here on a visit a year ago last summer and wanted two of the girls to go home with them and go to school and Clara, our oldest, and Cora, the next to the youngest girl, went with them. Clara had about enough money to pay her fare of $40 and Kate paid Cora’s. They have been there with them ever since. Clara went to school during the winter and taught school last summer and is going to school again this winter and expects to teach again the coming summer. Cora has been attending school right along but thinks of teaching the coming summer. She will be 17 years of age next July. (Note: Cora stayed with Aunt Lois Brown McQueen Argubright and Uncle John Argubright, at Hull, Iowa. Kate and Lois moved to Oregon and Washington in the early 1900s)
We have just passed through one of the severest winters ever experienced on this coast. There is probably plenty of feed for stock on this side of the mountain, but the report is that in eastern Washington and also Oregon the stock are perishing by thousands. The weather is warmer and I think the winter is over. Hay is worth $15 to $20 per ton. Potatoes $1.20 to $1.50 per bushel. Wheat $ .75 per bushel, Oats $ .40. Flour $4.00 to $4.40 per bushel. Butter $ .25 to $ .35. Eggs $ .20 to $ .25 per dozen. Beef $ .04 on the hoof and $ .08 dressed by the carcass.
I am still living where I have been ever since we came here. I bought 40 acres of railroad land at $4.00 per acre on time. When I first came here my health was poor and my family, though not large, was not able to do much toward their own support and for several years and it was a constant struggle for a bare existence. I had everything to buy - my land not being cleared up and being compelled to work out all the time I was able - to get something to eat and wear. My wife, in the meantime, took in washing to help make out a miserable existence. There were indeed dark days for us and you can well believe I had not much heart to write anyone. I had borrowed that money of Uncle Zebulon so long ago when I was young and full of hope for the future and could not see nor even realize the dark and the almost hopeless days that were in store for us. If I had been able to work, we could have got along nicely as there was plenty of work at good wages. As the girls grew up they went to work and so supported themselves and contributed something to the support of the family and so we managed to get along.
My land here is worth now $30 to $35 per acre. Land has gone up very rapidly in the past two years. A year ago last spring I could have bought land joining ours on the North, 80 acres for $7.00 per acres that is now worth $25 per acre. About a year ago I bought 40 acres of railroad land about 1 ½ miles South of here for $240 or $6 per acre on ten years time with interest at 7%. one tenth of the purchase money was the first payment. I think as land is selling it is worth $1200 now, as there is $4.00 or $5.00 worth of timber on it and the land is worth $20 to $25 per acre after the timber is removed and there are two saw mills only a little over a mile from the land and both want the timber.
About ten years ago being in such poor health, much of which was caused by sickness and exposure while in the army, I made application for a pension. My case was pending along until last Nov. when I got the good news that my pension was allowed and it went back to my discharge in September 1864. I got $4.00 per month until Oct 12, 1881 and $8.00 per month until Nov. 10, 1886 and $12.00 per month from that time. October 12th, 1881 was the date of my first examination by U.S. surgeons and Nov. 10, 1886 that of the last examination which you see is over three years ago and I am now entitled to a higher pension. I received as pension money in all $1,723. I paid $25 to my attorney and he never was one cent benefit to me in getting my claim allowed.
There was a special examiner here, who is a grandson of old great uncle Ichabod York. His name is Gilbert D. Mills. He said he was born in Brookfield, New York, but his folks moved, I think, to Allegany County when he was quite young. I claimed relationship with him, but I don’t know whether that branch of the York family is any kin to us or not, probably your father or Uncle Zebulon would know. Anyway, we had quite a visit about the people back in old Brookfield. His Aunt Catherine, who married Ben Gorton, was the first school teacher I ever went to school to, I think. And father took an Uncle of his out of the Anthony mill pond in which he was drowned sometime in August 1848. (Note: The uncle was Henry L. York born June 29, 1833 and drowned in Aug. 1842 while bathing in a branch of St. Anthony’s Pond per Brown Genealogy p. 178).
Your other letter you say you wrote one I never received. The first I knew of your trouble with cancer was in your last letter. I did receive a note from you last October requesting me to write a letter to be read at the Brown reunion, but I was away at the time and did not get the notice in time for a letter to reach you before the reunion would be over, so I did not write and kept putting it off until now. I will send you a record of the births and deaths in our family. (Note: Family genealogy is inserted here and quoted elsewhere.)
Baby Brown was born October 5, 1886 and died Feb. 4, 1890, aged 3 years and 4 months. The baby had never been named. We have always called her baby and it don’t seem right to call her anything else. (Note: My mother, Cora, told me that one day the baby said “My name going to be Edna. I imagine she was past two years old then. Edna is on her marker at Newankum Hill Cemetery.)
Additional Notes: Some letters were written by Alvin Brown to his sisters Catherine and Lois before he was married. Some are written back to Brookfield, before 1845. One is written when his father Horace and stepmother (living in Praireburg, Iowa in 1856) were visiting back in Brookfield and their three little boys were along. Some are written when Alvin went West from St. Joseph, Missouri on a wagon train to Cottage Grove, Oregon in 1854 and how dusty it was. Alvin was bothered by asthma. He told of being at Cripple Creek in California and how he was in Cottage Grove when the Civil War broke out.
Alvin moved to Oregon and Washington in 1877 and left Ashton, Iowa. His brother Henry did too because of the grasshoppers taking the crops three or four years straight. Henry was near Rock Rapids, Iowa. The grasshoppers left when they did! Too bad they left. Alvin had homesteaded (160 acres) in 1871 near Ashton, Iowa and left in 1877 for Cottage Grove, Oregon. with his wife and four girls. His brother, Henry and family also went. Alvin stayed a year in Cottage Grove and went to Newankum, Washington. It was Washington Territory then and he homesteaded.
Newankum is no more. The cemetery is there and there are homes all around it. In 1941 it was still in an out of the way place and in 1975 all those homes close to it. Hard to believe. Alvin’s wife, Mary Sisson is buried there and baby Edna, Sarah and husband Charles Knapp and Blanche Brown Romerman.
In April or May of 1871, Alvin came on the train to LeMars or Sioux City, Iowa and walked to Ashton (then called St. Gilman) and got lumber to build a small house. He may have gotten the lumber in LeMars. He left the lumber on his claim and walked to Doon, Iowa to visit his sister Kate McQueen and Kate’s husband, George McQueen who homesteaded in Lynn County in 1869 and were one of those who started Doon. They boarded the first teacher. They lived not too far from Doon at first and later in Doon and George Mcqueen went into real estate and bought a great deal of land in Lynn County. They sold it all for $5.00 an acre or so and went to Washington in early 1890s. Alvin Brown and Henry sold theirs for $5.00 an acre and then the grasshoppers left too. Too bad they did not stay one more year.
When Alvin came back to his homestead (from his walk to Doon), someone had stolen his lumber and he did not have money for any more lumber and built a sod house on his place. The oldest three girls were born in Praireburg. Clara, Blanche and Sarah. My mother, Cora, was born in the sod house on July 12, 1873. They lived in it a couple of years in summer but could not in winter and went to Alvin’s brothers, Henry Brown, north of Rock Rapids and stayed in his. He built a house by then and the first winter they were there had to move in with Henry before the winter was over. He had a good wheat crop the second year and in about 184 or 1875 was able to build a small house. But, the grasshoppers kept coming and he got discouraged and went West.
