Notes for Joseph Picard:

Source Family Contact:
Joseph is possibly the son of Joseph Picard and Amilie LeJeune. Joseph and Alezida lived in an area called "the Island" near False River (New Roads), LA. Joseph and Alezida's children: Thomas m. Rosa Major, Stanislas, Justin, and Marie Anastasie m. Armand Gremillion. Joseph commited suicide on either May 17 or 18, 1858 on the island at Pointe Coupee (New Roads) at age 35. One source says ... that he and Lesida were divorced before he died. There is no record of a divorce. His death notice in the Pointe Coupee Democrat says that he had squandered his estate, that he was melancoly and gloomy, and was unhappy in his domestic relations. The article says ... [description of the suicide].

Burial: May 18, 1858, St. Francis Church, Pointe Coupee, Lousiana
Cause of Death: suicide

Notes for Marie Julie Alizeda Gremillion:

Source Family Contact:
Alizeda died at age 53. Julie Lezida GREMILLION, (parents not listed), widow of Joseph PICARD, who died in 1858 and current wife of Zenon GREMILLION, died on 14 September, 1876 and was buried on the Island of False River, at Immaculate Conception Church, in Lakeland (Pointe Coupée parish), Louisiana on 15 September 1876, she was 53 (parents not given) (IMC-2, 87A) (B.R. Cath Ch. Rec. Vol 13- 1874-1876)
Some researchers believe her parents to be Paulin Gremillion and Severine Decuir. Paulin's parents were Charles and Marguerite Recuron. Charles' parents were Louis and Marie Josephe Robillard.
[Researcher1]... suggested that Irenee Gremillion (Charles Gremillion and Jeanne LeGrue, b. 1812) and Herphile (Europhile) Joffrion (Joseph Jopson Joffrion and Julie Guerin), had a daughter whose name was Marie Julie Lesida Gremillion b. ca. 1822. He states that Marie Julie Lesida Gremillion was married twice, dates unknown, 1st to: Joseph Picard, Jr. son of Joseph Picard and Brigette LeJeune, probably sometime before Oct. 1842 (9 months before their 1st child Thomas was born) . However, when trying to match up all of the dates, etc, Marie Julie Lesida Gremillion's birth date (approximated from her age at death) leaves too large a discrepancy with her alleged siblings. Brian also lists Irenee's birth date as 1812, which is 10 years later than November 28, 1802 that is listed in the Baton Rouge Catholic Church Records as Irenee's date of birth, making him about 19 to 20 years old when it is assumed that Lesida was born. Using Brian's date of birth would make him only 9 or 10 years old.
[Researcher2] ...also disputes this theory with a very plausable suggestion, that Marie Julie Lesida Gremillion's parents were Paulin Gremillion, I and Severine Decuir. [Researcher2] states that "In the publication, "Laconteur" - vols. 6-9, 1986-1989, it states that the Pointe Coupée Church records, from 1814 - 1837 are missing.
Her theory on the parents of Marie Alizida Gremillion is based on Marie Lesida and Joseph Picard being asked to be sponsors in the baptism of Marie Lesida Gremillion d/o of Paulin Gremillion and Euphemie Chenevert on 8 March 1840. [Researcher2] states that it follows that Paulin Gremillion named his daughter after Marie Julie Lesida Gremillion and chose her as the child's god mother. [Researcher2] further believes that this means that Marie Lesida Gremillion and Paulin Gremillion were closely related, possibly siblings.
Since Paulin Gremillion was the son of Paulin Gremillion and Severine Decuir, and was born on 7 April 1814, and, because the Pointe CoupTe Church records, from 1814- 1837 are missing, resulting in there not being any record of the births of any more children to Paulin and Severine Decuir after this date, [Researcher2] believes that Marie Julie Lesida Gremillion was the sister of Paulin Gremillion, II, and the daughter of Paulin Gremillion, I and Severine Decuir, and was born (ca. 1822) sometime during the period of the missing church records.
Another time that Joseph PICARD and Marie Lesida GREMILLION were sponsors at a GREMILLION baptism is the following: Jules Gremillion (Irenee Gremillion and Herphile Joffrion) bn. 16 July 1842 bt. 9 July 1843 spo. Joseph Picard and Julie Gremillion (PCP?10, 28) (vol 6, p. 286) One could come to the same conclusion here as [Researcher2] does with the other baptism and support [Researcher1]'s theory.

The following obituary was obtained from the Pointe Coupee Banner.... Funeral services for Francois Simon D'Abadie of Ventress, La., a native and resident of Pointe Coupee Parish, were held in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Chenal La., following an illness lasting several weeks. Internment was in the Catholic Cemetery, Reverend Louis Savoure officiating. He was 75 years old and a son of the late Ovide D'abadie and Fannie Major. The deceased, born on December 3, 1857, was a product of the trying Civil War and post war conditions, his father having served the entire duration of the Conflict. Although a member of that large Southern group, characterized by Walter Hines Page as the "forgotten man", he strove nobly for the advancement of education in his ward and parish and established the first school in his section, the family furnishing accommodations for the teacher and the classes. His larger subsequent efforts, especially as a member of the parish school board, designate him as a most consistent and persistent friend of public education and vocational agriculture. Although a farmer, stockman and merchant, he is better remembered as one who furnished playground ccommodations for the entire boyhood of that section and in whose yard several college baseball players played or received their initial training. Always his contention was that a father's serious duty is to keep his children at home, busy working or playing when not in school. In addition to the task of rearing a family of five sons and a daughter, as well as six stepchildren, is a list widows, orphans and other dependents. In the Ventress La., area he is survived by his wife, nee Cornelia Picard; one Brother, Alphonse; two sisters, Accia and Mrs. Frank Sicard; one daughter Beulah; and two sons, Fernand and Amedee; these with Charles of Donaldsonville, Felix of Houma, and Lawrence of San Diego, California, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father.

The following obituary was obtained from the Pointe Coupee Banner of .... F. Fernand Dabadie, Sr., 66 one of Pointe Coupee's most popular and well known citizens died unexpectedly at his Ventress home Monday May 14th at 3:45 PM. He had been in ill health for several years, but remained active. Dabadie, affectionately known throughout the parish as "One-armed-dab" was a lifelong resident of Pointe Coupee. He had been a salesman, farmer, and served as the Ventress Postmaster from ... and Registrar of voters from .... In the prime of his youth, he suffered the loss of his left arm in a cotton gin accident, which hindered little of his many activities. Long active in public affairs, Dabadie had only recently addressed the police jury. At that time he stated: "I have a few remarks to make here today-my talk will not be long, as I have this to contend with." (And Dabadie had pointed to his heart-which had been failing for many months.) He is survived by his widow, the former Blanche Picard; five sons, Wade, Fernand Jr., and Gerald "J. J.", of Baton Rouge; and Essex and Allen of Ventress; three daughters, Mrs. Jack Loupe, New Roads, Mrs. Kermit Pinsonnat, Livonia, and Mrs. Roy Hillyard, Ventress; three brothers, Felix, Houston, Texas; J. Charles, Baton Rouge and Lawrence Dabadie, Ventress; and nineteen grandchildren. Throngs attended the funeral, one of the largest ever witnessed here. Religious services were conducted from Nilands funeral home, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 3:30 PM Tuesday May 15th . Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetary.
