There is a cute family story about US Grant Phelps, I don't know how true it is but has
been in our family for about sixty years.
My Great-grandpa Grant Phelps was born without any hair anywhere on his body, with the
exception of two on his big toe. At least that is what we were told. I remember Gramps as
a jolly person, very red toned skin, and when he became upset or wanted to get someone's
attention he would go "Yep, Yep, Yep." I can still see him sitting on the front
porch with Granny and still so clearly hear him.
When Gramps was getting older and his son Ivan was preaching, Gramps decided to go to
service and when the alter call was given, Gramps went down the aisle. There were lots of
people there that hot summer night and for some reason most all of them decided to go down
to the alter. There was no room left, so Gramps knelt on the front bench.
This very heavy lady came down, and unable to kneel sat down on the front bench next to
where Gramps was kneeling. She looked down and saw Gramps' bald head... and thinking it
was her knee, covered it with her dress.
All you could hear was Gramps going "Yep,Yep,Yep," and see his head under her
dress. It was told that he never went down the front again.
