George W. Gordon

George Washington Gordon is a native Kentuckian, born in Daviess County, February 4, 1846. His father, Obadiah Gordon, was born in Virginia, September 3, 1795. He followed the trade of a carpenter for forty years, died May 9, 1883. George W., at the age of twenty-two united himself in marriage with Cynthia E. Brooks of Muhlenburg County; after marriage, he followed the vocation of a farmer for eight years. In the year 1875, he engaged in the tobacco trade, which he has since followed in connection with farming. In 1876 , he bought thirty-one acres of land, where he now resides, and now through trade and various business changes and close application, owns 227 acres of land, well improved and under cultivation, had good dwelling, barns and large tobacco warehouse, besides store, and stock of general merchandise. Mr. Gordon in merchandise and tobacco and on his farm carries from $4000 to $5000 in stock. Cynthia E. (Brooks) Gordon died August 4, 1883, leaving six children: Mary B., Elvada H., Lena L., Edna A., Finess W. and Georgie E, all of whom are living. In his second marriage, Mr. Gordon was united with Mary Turley of Ohio County, KY. This union is blessed with one child -- Lenna A. Mr. Gordon is in politics a Republican. He is a member of the Baptist Church.


Brother Shields was inducted into the fellowship of the Green River Church
by Christian Experience and Believer's Immersion on October 25, 1890, being baptized by Pastor J. N. Jarnagin, in his fifteenth year. Having been
chosen by the Church as a new Deacon on March 27th, 1909, he was duly
ordained on April 23rd, 1909, by pastors G. W. Gordon, A. J. Snodgrass and A. B. Gardner. Brethren J. P. Miller, C. C. Thomas, Martin Flener and
Benjamin Benton were ordained then, too.

BIRCH SHIELDS, the grandson (paternally) of William Shields, had been licensed to preach by the Church on August 21, 1909, resigning as Clerk shortly thereafter. On October 23rd, following, the Pond Run Church requested that he be ordained to the Gospel Ministry as its Pastor. This was done by his home Church on November 23, 1909, with Pastors G. H. Lawrence, John T. Casebier, G. W. Gordon and A. B. Gardner
serving as the Presbytery. Brother G. W. Gordon presented the Bible to the Candidate, a gift from the ordaining Church.

Brother Christopher C. Thomas united with the Green River Church by
Christian Experience and Baptism in October, 1903, being baptized by pastor A. B. Gardner. His wife, Cordia (Edmonds) Thomas, had come into the Green River Church prior to their marriage by Christian Experiance [sic] and Baptism in November, 18l88. She was fourteen years of age at the time. He was one of the five men selected and ordained as Deacons by the Church on April 23, 1909. The others were: J. P. Miller, Warren Shields, Martin Flener and Benjamin Benton. Pastors G. W. Gordon, A. J. Snodgrass and A. B. Gardner served as the ordaining Presbytery.

On Saturday, June 13, 1891, he was licensed to preach the Gospel of Christ
by the Green River Church. On May 31, 1892, he was ordained to the full
Gospel Ministry by Pastor T. H. Balmain and Brethren J. S. Rogers, Joseph
B. Rogers, Sr., A. Rogers, S. T. Stevens and C. S. Taylor of Salty Creek
Church; Pastor G. W. Gordon of Cool Spring Church; Pastor J. C. Davis of
Rosine Church; Dr. J. S. Coleman (Pastor), Rev. James N. Jarnagin, and Bro. Joseph Blackburn Rogers, Jr., from Hartford Church; Brother J. M. Rogers from Beaver Dam Church; Pastor A. J. Snodgrass, Rev. J. H. Aldrage and Brother W. E. White from Mount Vernon Church.
