From Miss
Elizabeth M. Seamans, November 11, 1905, when she was visiting
Factoryville, Pennsylvania
"I
wonder if you have heard of the Legend, of the ancestry, of our
Seamans. I found it among my relatives, who came here in 1817 from Conn.
King James VI, of Scotland, became James 1, of England, the family name
being Stuart and were ardent Catholics, but one renowneced the faith
and was banished to Virginia, but was allowed to take money, treasures
and silver, the king gave him a grant of land in the new country, in
part of which Charleston now stands, the man had a wife and three sons,
he died and in the course of time the mother again married, and after
her death, her husband became guardian of the three boys, he married
again and had a family, the mother of which was anxious to get rid of
the Stuart boys, the stepfather took them to the sea and bribed a
Captain to take them to the Plymouth Rock Country under the name of
Seamans, and get them a home and they would be provided for, the oldest
boy knew why they had been sent away and when he had became of age he
told his brothers of their property in Virginia and he was going to
claim it, he went in a vessel that was never heard from and that was
supposed to have sunk, two years later the second boy made the attempt,
but the vessel was wrecked and only two were saved to tell the
sad tale of disaster, the third boy decided that as both of his
brothers had lost their lives in the attempt to claim their property,
he would remain in the Plymouth Rock Country and retain the name of
Seamans.
Swansea Mass is only a little way from Plymouth Rock, now do you
suppose that there is a shadow of truth in this tradition.
Sincerely Elizabeth"

The Hornbine Church.—This church is in the southeast part of
Rehoboth, and belongs to the order of the "Six-Principle Baptists."
Their creed is continued in Hebrews, the sixth chapter, first and
second verses. The name "Hornbine" is a corruption of Hornbeam, and was
given to the church because there were many trees of this species in
its vicinity.
About thirty members of the Second Baptist Church in Swansea formed
themselves into a church in Rehoboth, and ordained Mr. Daniel Martin as
their pastor Feb. 8, 1763.1 Elder Martin was the eldest son of Deacon
Melatiah Martin, of Swansea, lie was born Sept. 23, 1702, followed the
trade of a house carpenter, and died Nov. 18, 1781, aged
seventy-nine. [See below
Aaron Seamans married Lillis Martin, daughter of Daniel]
He had nine children. In 1770 he published a discourse against
particular election and efficacious grace in conversion, to which the
Rev. Isaac Backus published an answer the following year. Soon after
the settlement of Elder Martin over this church, Elder Nathan Pierce
was ordained us his colleague, and continued to preach to this people
for forty years.
Some years before the death of Elder Pierce, Elder Thomas
Seamans was ordained as his colleague. Mr. Seamans was a farmer by
occupation, and possesed great physical vigor. He preached a sermon in this
church after he was one hundred years of age, and died in 1826, at the
advanced age of one hundred and four years, five months, and fifteen
days, probably the oldest person that ever died in Rehoboth.
(See obituary of his brother Noah Seamans in Jackson, Michigan below)
He spent the last few years of his life with his son, Mr.
Comfort Seamans, who owned a farm about a mile north of the church.
His remains lie buried in a
little plot on the farm enclosed by a strong wall, but overgrown with
shrubs. An elm and two cedars of considerable size stand within the
plot. The rude stones that mark the grave are without inscription.
Beside him are buried his son and several members of his family. Elder
Seamans' grandson, Josiah Simmons, was an honored deacon in this church
for many years. During Elder Seamans' pastorate he was assisted by
several colleagues. Elder Benjamin Mason, of Swansea, preached to this
church for a time.

Notes for CELIA SEAMANS: Celia (Seamans) Fish (wife of David C. Fish) May 13, 1887
Mrs. Celia Fish
Mrs. Fish, whose death occurred at
the residence of her son-in-law, A.J. Quick, of Leroy, on Friday, the
13th of May, 1887, had reached the advanced age of 83 years, and
retained to a remarkable degree her vigor of mind and body up to a
short period before her demise. She, with her husband, was one of the
early pioneers of Leroy Township, which was named after her son, Leroy,
the first male child born in the township. She was a woman of rare
originality of thought, earnest conviction, strong practical judgement
and fine social qualities, a combination which fitted her for the part
she has borne in developing our community from the pioneer condition of
half a century ago.
The deceased leaves nine children,
six of whom were at the funeral; three sons, William, Leroy, and
Washington, and three daughters, Mrs. Copeland, wife of the Rev. Wm.
Copeland, of the M.E. church, Mrs. A.J. Quick, and Mrs. Cordelia
Johnson.
Mrs. Fish possessed a wide
acquaintance in this section of the state by whom her memory will be
affectionately cherished. We here present the concluding portion of the
funeral discourse by Rev. James Berry: "We halt to-day for a few
moments in the journey of life to say the last farewell over one of our
number. The skeleton foot of death, which enters the loftiest as well
as the humblest stations of life, has invaded our circle. But a week
ago a commanding presence moved in our midst, whom we shall see no
more, a cheerful companion who will no more make glad our hearts by her
happy life and encouraging words, a kind neighbor who will no more be
ready with willing hands to minister to the wants of those about her, a
loving mother whose labor of love for her children is ended, a witness
to the power of Jesus Christ to save on earth has gone to join that
innumerable company of the redeemed on the other shore.
Celia Seamans was born February 2,
1804, in the state of Rhode Island. She moved with her parents to
Connecticut, then to Vermont, and then to New York. In 1822 she was
married to Mr. David Fish, with whom she shared the joys and sorrows,
successes and privations incident to life in a new country, until four
years ago, when he was taken from her side.
In 1832 with her family she came
to Michigan. She lived in Washtenaw County for two years, and then
moved to Leroy in 1834. This was then a wilderness, but she has been
spared to see the forest give place to the cultivated fields, the log
houses to beautiful dwellings, the wilderness to blossom as the rose.
For over fifty years she has lived here and was well known to all. Said
one of her neighbors, "I don't think Aunt Celia had an enemy in the
world.
Everybody was glad to see her
cheerful face and no one was more welcome to the social circle, or more
sadly missed if she was absent."
Long has she been spared, but that
summons to which every ear shall hearken and all mortality obey,
reached her at last, and without a murmur or a fear she received it,
and, folding her hands, she quietly fell asleep as an infant in its
mother's arms.
Eternity beckoned to one whose
labors here were ended, and she sank down to rest with resignation to
the decrees as they were written.

Notes for SILAS AMASA SEAMANS: Per Mabel Eloise Seamans... "Great Aunt Nancy was
funny. When Zakock complained (he always did) that the busciuts
were only fit for hots to eat, she fed them to the hogs and then how he
swore! She was always calm and easy."
Uncle Silas had ESP. He
told things about to happen. Once he told where to find a pair of
spectacles - so many feet to a certain tree, then a ways away - they
were found under a chip of wood.
Silas' children were John, Edgar,
Annette, and Lula. All were good singers. Ed was in an
opera. He sang at Lake Harriet. Dad planned to go to hear
him. I begged to go too. He got there too late.
Didn't say a word of disappointment.
Sarah Ann Spaulding had a
daughter, Minnie, who lived in Zadock's house at one time.

had a daughter, Faith Seamans Wheelock who lived in Vallejo (as of
